The Seattle Mariners’ Spring Breakout game will take place on Mar. 20, just six days before opening day against the Cleveland Indians.
The Mariners remain one of the top farm systems in all of baseball, with ESPN placing them at number seven, MLB Pipeline at eight and Baseball America in 10th position. Admittedly these rankings aren’t quite as favorable as last year due to factors such as Harry Ford being traded away and Cole Young now being on their Major League roster, but the M’s are still in good standing overall.
Not that this will be enough to satisfy some Mariners fans (and people within the organization), with a fierce and proud loyalty to what has been built in Seattle over the years since the Jerry Dipoto era began in late Sept. 2015. Well, now comes a golden opportunity to show people just how talented the prospects really are, courtesy of Spring Breakout.
This will be the third annual edition of MLB’s Spring Breakout, with the event taking place between Mar. 19-22 and showcasing 16 games. It’s a chance for baseball’s future stars to play in exhibition contests against one another around ballparks in Arizona and Florida.
M’s to face Brewers

For the Mariners specifically, their young group of prospects will take on the Milwaukee Brewers at 2:10 p.m. PT on Mar. 20. The exhibition game will be played at American Family Fields of Phoenix, technically making the M’s the road team.
The preliminary 40-man Spring Breakout player pools were announced for all 30 Major League teams on Thursday, with the Mariners specifically including six of the top 100 prospects in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. They are Colt Emerson (9), Kade Anderson (21), Ryan Sloan (33), Lazaro Montes (43), Michael Arroyo (67) and Jonny Farmelo (78).
Emerson will of course receive the most attention as the Mariners’ number one prospect, as he continues to make a compelling case to be on their opening day roster. (Although most projections have him waiting until later on in the season to make his Major League debut.) Anderson and Sloan will also be fascinating to watch, as both seem to be ahead of schedule in their own bids to reach the “The Show”.

Which prospects to watch out for

It will be interesting to see Arroyo and Beilenson in action following their return from the World Baseball Classic with Team Columbia and Team Israel respectively. Arroyo will be particularly intriguing after impressing early in spring training with a .1.779 OPS in 11 plate appearances.
We’re also looking forward to seeing Stevenson play, with him being touted as the Mariners’ starting catcher of the future. Finally, keep an eye on Farmelo and Knipp, with both having their progress through the farm system compromised along the way by injury issues.
