Brian Woo pitched his best game of the season, and the Seattle Mariners (18-20) earned their fifth series win of the season against the Atlanta Braves (26-12). In the masterful performance, Woo matched a season high with 9 strikeouts, allowed one hit and two walks in six scoreless innings against MLB’s best-hitting team. In his 8th start of the season, Woo threw 98 pitches ( 66 strikes). The outing was the fifth time this season Woo has pitched six or more innings and allowed one or fewer hits since 2025.
“It’s a good fastball. Plays well up in the zone. Secondary stuff was good too. When you come in here, you’re going to face good pitching. It’s probably one of the top rotations in the game, I would say, but we were right there, had a chance late, Braves Manager Walt Wies said after the game. “But Woo threw the ball really well. And as I said, they all do. They got good starters.”
RUN SUPPORT
In addition to the stellar effort by Woo, the Mariner hitters delivered when needed. Julio Rodriguez hit a solo home run in the 6th to give the Mariners a much-needed insurance run. It was the slugger’s fifth home run of the season.
In addition to the timely hitting, the Mariners’ bullpen came up big after Woo exited the game, delivering a stellar performance. Cooper Criswell relieved Woo at the top of the seventh inning and retired the Braves Austin Riley, Mauricio Dubon, and Michael Harris II to preserve the shutout. Eduaardo Bazardo took over for Criswell at the top of the eighth and gave up singles to Mike Yastrzemski and Sean Murphy. Dominic Smith pinch hit for Jim Jarvis and his sacrifice to center, scoring Yastrzemski, which quieted the Mariner faithful, who were busy planning post-game celebration plans.
A BIZAR CHALLENGE AND PUT OUT
The Mariners’ and their fans’ fortunes turned when Bazardo’s pickoff attempt on Jorge Mateo at first base was ruled in favor of the runner. The Mariners challenged the call and won, which became the second out of the inning. After a single, Braves lead-off hitter Drake Baldwin Bazardo struck out Ozzie Albies to end the inning, with the Mariners holding on to the 3-1 lead. Jose Ferrer shut down the Braves in the top of the ninth to secure the series win. It was the first time the Braves had lost a series in 2026.
