Cautious Return for Cal Raleigh After Injury Absence

Cal Raleigh returned to the Marines’ lineup Tuesday night after a three-game absence due to soreness on his right side. Raleigh experienced the soreness during the Mariners’ Friday night game with the Kansas City Royals.  The All-Star Catcher missed Saturday’s game with the Royals and underwent an MRI.

“With side injuries, you have to be really, really careful,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. “And we really feel like the paces that we’ve kind of put him through. The training room does such a great job … helping him test it in any way possible. And he’s really not feeling it. And so a chance to get him back out there today.”

JUST GLAD TO BE BACK IN THE LINEUP

Raleigh returned to the lineup as the designated hitter, and despite going 0-4 in the game, Raleigh’s return was the big news for the Mariners.

“Obviously, we’re going to be cautious as we get him back into it,” Wilson said after the game .”But a chance for him to swing the bat today.”

“We’re looking at it pretty much at-bat to at-bat at this point,” Wilson said. “And we’ll just kind of continue to watch it and we’ll make decisions as we feel like as the assessments come in.”

Before the  injury, Raleigh  had played in all 33 previous games with 7 home runs. Raleigh has never been placed on the injury list in his MLB career.

ABLE BACK UPS

During Raleigh’s absence, Mitch Garver started two games and Johnny Pereda one game. Garver was behind the plate for Tuesday’s game. The Mariners are carrying all three of their catchers on the 40-man roster as Raleigh works his way back to full strength.
