Mariners farm system continues to rank as one of the best in MLB

An MLB Pipeline executive poll commends the Mariners front office company for continuing to do a tremendous job stockpiling young talent.

There’s no denying Jerry Dipoto has received plenty of criticism during his tenure in Seattle with the Mariners – some of it deserved and some not so much. However, one thing which he has usually been consistently praised for is his ability to discover and develop young talent.

It helps when your peers have a similar opinion about your success, which is exactly the case based on an executive poll carried out recently by MLB Pipeline. They asked front offices around baseball to offer their thoughts on a variety of subjects including who is best at acquiring prospects in trades, develops talent the best and so on.

Mariners fans will be happy and proud to know the organization stood out in a number of areas, including ranking first for best use of the draft, with 20 percent of the votes. They were also ranked as having the second-best farm system and second at developing pitchers, at 17.8 percent and 18.2 percent respectively.

This is highlighted by currently having seven prospects in MLB Pipeline’s top 100. This includes Colt Emerson (9), Kade Anderson (23), Lazaro Montes (29), Ryan Sloan (44), Michael Arroyo (63), Jonny Farmelo (75) and Jurrangelo Cijntje (90).

Dipoto’s (and now Justin Hollander’s) track record has seen all five of their first round draft picks between 2018 and 2022 make it to the big league. Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Emerson Hancock and Cole Young are still with the Mariners, while Harry Ford was traded to the Washington Nationals last month as part of a deal for José A. Ferrer.

Of course it’s one thing to have success with a first round pick, but what about lower down in the draft? The Mariners have done well here too, highlighted by Bryce Miller in the fourth round, Bryan Woo in the sixth round and best of all Cal Raleigh in the third round, who in 2025 finished second in AL MVP voting and become just the seventh ever player to hit 60 home runs in a season.

As a final sign of the promise within the organization as perceived by their peers around baseball, is being voted tied-fifth best in developing hitters, at 4.5 percent. Overall the future looks promising for a Mariners team which is one of only two American League teams (along with the Houston Astros) to have recorded at least 85 regular season wins in the past five years.
