UW vs. UC Davis: Three things to watch for in Saturday’s game

UW will take on the UC Davis Aggies on Saturday in another late-night showdown. They are looking to extend their 21-game home win streak. The Aggies come into this game following a win over Utah Tech. UC Davis won 11 games in 2024 and comes into this game as one of the best teams in the Big Sky conference. Here is a look at what to watch for when the Huskies take on the Aggies at 8 pm this Saturday.

Fisch wants a cleaner game from his offense in week 2

Last week, UW fought through early-season miscues before eventually taking control of the game in the second half. In their second possession on offense, the Huskies had a false start near the red zone, which derailed a drive. UW also fumbled a snap in their opponent’s territory with under two minutes left in the first half. Instead of the Huskies taking a lead into halftime, the Rams scored right before the half to tie the game after recovering the fumble. Here is what Fisch said about making improvements from week 1 to week 2:

“Well, I’d like to see improvement in every area, first of all, I would like us not to have that many self-inflicted wounds on offense. When we have drives that are inside the 30-yard line, I would like us to score touchdowns on all those. Two of them we did, you know one of them we took a false start, and then a sack, and had to punt it. Another one, we fumbled the ball. So we can’t have that happen.”

Clearly, Jedd Fisch wants to see his team execute better in this week’s game against UC Davis. Fisch wants the Huskies to play cleaner on offense and not beat themselves. That way, they can finish drives with touchdowns instead of punting or turning the ball over.

CAN THE UW OLINE HAVE ANOTHER BIG GAME?

Against Colorado State, UW’s offensive line had a solid performance. Each of the Huskies’ offensive linemen had good grades from PFF, with RT Drew Azzopardi having the highest grade of 88.2. UW’s O-line carved out cavernous holes for the ground game. Jonah Coleman had 177 yards rushing and was named Doak Walker Running Back of the Week. Overall, the Huskies rushed for 283 yards as a team. Demond Williams also took advantage of having a clean pocket for most of the game. He went 18/24, for 226 yards, and a touchdown in the Huskies’ 38-21 win over the Rams.

CAN UW DEFENSE WIN THE BATTLE OF THE TRENCHES?

The Huskies’ defensive line will be looking to do a better job of shedding blocks against UC Davis on Saturday. In week one, the Huskies’ interior defensive line did not record a tackle for lost yardage. However, the Huskies’ interior defensive line was able to clear tackling lanes for their linebackers against Colorado State. UW will need to be better at creating penetration into the backfield in week two against dual-threat QB Caden Pinnick. The Huskies’ defensive line has a good opportunity to win battles in the trenches this week against the Aggies’ offensive line. The Aggies allowed six sacks against Utah Tech last week in their 31-24 win.
