The Washington Huskies (1-0) are looking to extend their win streak against the Utah State Aggies (0-1) to 4-0 all-time this upcoming Saturday. Saturday’s game will be the Huskies’ second consecutive home game. The Dawgs start will start the 2026 season with four consecutive games. The last time the Huskies had four consecutive home games was in 2022. The Aggies are looking for a bounce-back win after last week’s disappointing 29-17 loss to Idaho State. The Huskies will look to build on their 24-10 victory over the Washington State Cougars. Here are several takeaways going into the Huskies game with the Aggies.
Keeping The Defense Rolling
Washington’s defense had an outstanding effort, holding the Cougars to an impressive 0-11 third-down conversion rate. The last time the Husky defense shut out a team on third down was a 16-13 win over USC in 2009, The Huskies will be looking to continue a similar historic trend against the Aggie. Historically against the Aggies, Washington’s defense has been a dominant factor in their victories. In 1908, the Huskies shut out the Aggies in a 45-0 victory; most recently, the Husky defense recorded 13 quarterback sacks in a 53-12 win.
COLLECTIVE EFFORT ON DEFENSE
The Huskies’ defense has the potential to be among the best in the BigTen Conference. It is a defense with individual players who have the potential to become stars. Against the Cougars, several interior linemen had breakout games. Edge rusher Ramzek Fruean recorded a career-high three solo tackles in his first college game. Fellow edge rusher Jacob Lane was just as aggressive, recording three tackles and a quarterback hit. The players look to be flourishing under second-year defensive coordinator Ryan Walters
Bringing the Energy
The Husky fans showed big time at the Apple Cup this past weekend with their contagious energy. Despite the large number of Roudy Coug fans that made the trip from Palouse, the Dawgs definitely made their barks known to all of the cats in the area. Their situational awareness on Washington State’s offensive drives played a crucial role in their Apple Cup victory. Head Coach Jedd Fisch wants fans to replicate that energy this weekend against the Aggies.
“Hopeful that we have a great crowd, I hope that we can replicate the energy each week,” said Fisch. “The one we had last week was amazing, the energy in the stadium that I hope we can have that type of energy 6 times more this year.”
Knowing The Opposition And Self Reflection
Fisch understands his team will face a veteran coach in Utah State’s Bronco Mendenhall, who will have his team ready for the challenge. Fisch’s message to these players has been to improve their performance from last week. The Huskies suffered from sloppy execution and self-inflicted wounds
“For us though, it’s going to be about what can we do better,” Fisch said.” “Where can we play better, how can we be less penalized, how can we finish in the redzone… Our goal will also be to not extend any drives on defense because of penalties. “If the drive is extended it’s earned, not given, so if we can do those two things and focus on those things, were excited about what can happen here this season.”
