There was a collective sigh at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center yesterday. Quarterback Sam Darnold has been diagnosed with a unique soft tissue injury. Darnold suffered the injury during the Seahawks’ first offensive series against the New England Patriots. Drew Lock stepped in and finished the game. Preliminary diagnosis suggested Darnold had a hip injury, and speculation was rampant. Internet Doctors had Darnold missing five to eight weeks, and some speculated he would miss the season.
RETURN IS SOONER THAN LATER
Yesterday’s designation is good news because the injury was a muscle injury, which means it is a matter of the muscle healing, without surgery. The injury left the hip intact.
The Seahawks have not made a roster move at quarterback, which means several things. First, the team is confident in Drew Lock as the starting quarterback while Darnold heals. Second, the team believes in its third quarterback and now Lock’s backup: Jalen Milroe. Milroe started and played the Seahawks’ last preseason game and showed his skill set. The Seahawks could still make a move this week. Head coach Mike Macdonald will hold his weekly media briefing on Wednesday and he could give more clarity. No promises here, though. Macdonald has become quite deft at not revealing injury updates unless he has to.
