It’s been a challenging year for Julio Rodriguez, but he continues to do the Mariners proud both in the local community and further afield.
Julio Rodriguez will be the first to admit this season has not gone as planned for him and the Mariners. He’s on course for the less productive campaign of his five years in the majors, although we do suspect things could have played out differently if he didn’t suffer a concussion in early July. In any event, he still has reason to be proud, after being named as the M’s nominee for The Roberto Clemente Award.
The Roberto Clemente Award is arguably the most prestigious honor in Major League Baseball. It is given annually to the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. Originally known as the Commissioner’s Award, it was renamed in 1973 following Clemente’s death in a plane crash while delivering supplies to victims of the Nicaragua earthquake.

Three Mariners have won the award previously, including Harry Reynolds (1991), Jamies Moyer (2003) and Edgar Martinez (2004). This is Rodriguez’s first nomination and is well-deserved recognition for all the work he has done off the field, both in the local community and beyond. Since making his Major League debut in 2022, he has focused on expanding youth baseball access and aiding under-resourced communities in the greater-Seattle area, his hometown of Loma de Cabrera in the Dominican Republic, and around the globe.
In 2024, Rodriguez launched his No Limits Foundation to create pathways to success for under-resourced youth. Since its inception, the foundation has distributed more than $2 million in cash donations, goods and services to underprivileged youth across the globe. Someone who is a standup individual and deserves recognition for all he has done off the field
They always say never to forget where you come from, and Rodriguez has taken this to heart in the best possible way. He donated Loma de Cabrera’s first ambulance to their Civil Defense headquarters, providing citizens with more advanced medical resources, and last year rebuilt the house of an elderly woman whose home in Cabarete was flooded shortly before he visited the area. He also helped provide on-site vision tests and eyeglasses for residents of Loma de Cabrera and distributed apples with Manzanas Washington to promote healthy eating earlier this year.
