With two weeks until pitchers and catchers report, the Mariners extended 31 invitations, with 12 invitees having Major League experience.
We can certainly appreciate that there will be Seattle Mariners fans disappointed in the moves made by the club thus far during the offseason, or should that be the lack of moves. As much as we know the front office has attempted to bring in players who can help, it just hasn’t really worked out so far, with Donovan Solano the only addition of note.
Irrespective of this, fans will still be excited by virtue of spring training being upon us, with Mariners pitchers and catchers set to report to the Peoria Sports Complex on Feb. 12. Pitchers and catchers will have their first workout the following day, with the first full squad workout taking place on Feb. 18.
With this in mind, there was an important update by the Mariners on Thursday morning. As per a press release by the club, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced that 31 non-roster players have been invited to Major League spring training.
On a basic level, the 31 invitees comprises of 16 pitchers and 15 position players. In addition, 21 of the players spent time with the Mariners organization during the 2024 season.
Mariners prospects
Breaking the invitees down further, 12 are players who rank among Baseball America’s Top 30 Mariners prospects. These include Colt Emerson (1), Cole Young (2), Michael Arroyo (4), Harry Ford (6), Lazaro Montes (7), Logan Evans (8), Brandyn Garcia (12), Ben Williamson (13), Josh Caron (18), Brock Rodden (24), Hunter Cranton (27) and Rhylan Thomas (30).
Of the prospect invitees, Emerson is clearly the player who will be of most interest to fans. The shortstop is ranked 16th in Baseball America’s Top 100, and is already making excellent progress since being selected 22nd overall in the 2023 draft.
In all, the Mariners had a Major League-high seven players selected in Baseball America’s Top 100 (subscription required). Of those, the other four prospects who received invitations to spring training included Young (56), Arroyo (77), Ford (95) and Montes (97).

Invitees with MLB experience
Of the 31 invitees by the Mariners, there are 12 who have Major League experience including pitcher Drew Pomeranz, who was an MLB All-Star in 2016 and won a World Series ring with the Boston Red Sox in 2018. Another interesting player is fellow pitcher Neftalí Feliz, who never quite built on being a top prospect who earned both an All-Star selection and won AL Rookie of the Year in 2010.
The other pitcher invitees with Major League experience include Jesse Hahn, Josh Fleming, three-time NPB All Star Shintaro Fujinami, Casey Lawrence, Adonis Medina, Austin Kitchen and the ‘other’ Luis Castillo. The three position players with Major League experience are catchers Jacob Nottingham and Nick Raposo, along with infielder/outfielder Samad Taylor, who is an intriguing player to keep an eye on during spring training.
Are there any of the 31 invitees in particular who you are looking forward to seeing at spring training, whether it be one of the prospects or otherwise? Let us know in the comments section below.
