Dylan Moore is rewarded and Mariners make a trade

Dylan Moore is off to a fantastic start in 2025 and he received recognition on Monday, while the Mariners made a deal with the Cubs.

Dylan Moore is mostly known for his excellent defense and versatility in Seattle, which resulted in winning his first ever Gold Glove last season as a utility player. Now though he appears to have added more consistent production offensively, and he was duly rewarded on Monday.

Moore has been named American League Player of the Week for the period between April 14-20. It is the first time he has received the reward during a Major League career which is now in its seventh year.

For the week in question, the 32-year-old played in six games and hit .385, which included one double, three home runs and five RBI and the way to a 1.177 OPS. He also had one walk, three stolen bases and six runs.

Highlight of the week for Dylan Moore

The standout performance of Moore’s impressive week came in Cincinnati on April 15 against the Reds. He had the first lead-off home run of his Major League career, then hit another bomb later on in the contest for his fourth career multi-homer game.

This is just reward for the 2015 seventh round draft pick, who has begun the 2025 season on fire and entering the series in Boston leads the Mariners with a .967 OPS and 188 OPS+. He is the first Mariner to win the AL weekly award since Julio Rodríguez last year on September 21.

To really give an insight into just how much Moore has improved offensively this season, his .316 batting average and .967 OPS are significant upgrades over his career averages, which were .206 and .701 respectively entering this year. Whether this hot form continues remains to be seen, but he certainly deserves it as one of the most popular and loyal players on the team.

Mariners trade away a former All-Star

In other news, the Mariners have traded southpaw reliever Drew Pomeranz to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations. The news was first reported by Patrick Mooney and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. (Subscription required.)

Pomeranz was a non-roster invitee to spring training this year for the Mariners. He began the season in Triple-A Tacoma, where he produced a 4.66 ERA, 14 strikeouts and 1.241 WHIP in 9.2 combined innings over nine appearances.

The 36-year-old has a resume which includes an All-Star selection in 2016, and a World Series ring in 2018 with the Boston Red Sox. He has a career 3.91 ERA, 4.12 FIP and 1.346 WHIP over 11 seasons in the Majors, but hasn’t actually pitched in the big league since 2021.

As for why the Mariners moved Pomeranza, Rosenthal noted his contract contained an upward mobility clause which meant the club had to call him up or trade him, if another team was willing to offer him a big league roster spot. In this respect, the 2010 fifth overall draft pick is expected to be active for the Cubs on Wednesday.

Do you see Moore continuing his strong start indefinitely, or do you expect him to take a step back as the season progresses? Let us know in the comments section below.
