Mariners to call up Kade Anderson for his highly anticipated debut

Kade Anderson is baseball’s top pitching prospect and will now get to show his stuff for the Mariners, starting on Saturday versus the Cubs.

It was a tough series finale for the Mariners in Milwaukee, as they lost 7-4 to the Brewers. It was an uphill battle from effectively the word go, as George Kirby gave up six earned runs to highlight the inconsistent nature of a rotation which has shown plenty of moments this season of both elite and disastrous pitching. Kirby’s outing might have also helped convince the M’s that it was finally time to give Kade Anderson his shot in The Show.

As first reported by ESPN‘s Jeff Passan, the Mariners are calling up Anderson and he will make his Major League debut on Saturday versus the Cubs. Bryan Woo was scheduled to take the mound on Saturday, but will now be pushed back a day and start in the series finale. It’s fair to characterize Anderson’s pending debut as one of the most anticipated of the 2026 season.

Last year’s third overall draft pick has been sensational during his first season of pro ball, and MLB Pipeline rank him as the top pitching prospect in all of baseball. His 1.06 ERA and 0.643 WHIP over 93.1 innings are both the best in the minors, while he has also produced an outrageous 135 strikeouts compared to just 13 walks and 47 hits. His .147/.183/.216 batting line versus Double-A hitters is the lowest any pitcher has permitted at any level of the minors over the past 10 seasons (with a minimum of 15 starts).

On top of all this, Anderson is on a streak of 20.2 scoreless innings, and it makes all the sense in the world why so many people have been clamoring for a while now for the Mariners to call him up. At the same time, the southpaw couldn’t have been allocated a much tougher opponent to make his Major League debut against. As of Friday morning, the Cubs have the best OPS (.806) and wRC+ (125) versus left-handed pitching this season.

Adding extra pressure to the situation, Anderson’s debut will be a nationally televised game. This will be a significant test of his renowned ability to remain calm and rise to the occasion in high profile situations. Certainly he has an excellent track record in this regard, including being named the 2025 College World Series Most Outstanding Player after helping LSU win the national title, and pitching a scoreless inning as the AL starter for the Futures Game during All-Star week.

The Mariners are still in contention for the playoffs, sitting 4.0 games off the AL West summit and 3.0 games back of the final wild card spot. However, their 60-68 record is disappointing and they need a boost, which is where Anderson comes in. While the rotation has all the talent in the world, it has taken a collective dip more recently, ranking 17th in the majors with a 4.10 ERA since the beginning of July.

Anderson doesn’t top the charts when it comes to throwing heat, but his overall delivery still has the fastball graded as a 60 by MLB Pipeline. He has plus control and command over all four of the pitches that he utilizes, with his changeup being his most dangerous weapon. You would have to expect Saturday’s game at T-Mobile Park will be a sellout, with fans hoping the 22-year-old can jumpstart the Mariners’ playoff challenge.
