Jedd Fisch discusses Colorado State game at Monday’s presser

On Monday, Jedd Fisch met with the media to discuss what he saw on film from last Saturday’s game against Colorado State. Fisch said he awarded game balls at yesterday’s practice and team meeting. RB Jonah Coleman, QB Demond Williams, S Makell Esteen, RB Adam Mohammed, DE Jacob Lane, FB Kade Eldridge, the O-Line, and University President Jones each received game balls. Fisch’s press conference mostly focused on the Huskies’ offensive line and the defense. Here are the main takeaways from Jedd Fisch’s Monday presser.

Fisch highlights strong O-Line play in Saturday’s win

One of the biggest questions entering this season was the Huskies’ offensive line. When discussing the play of his offensive line in last Saturday’s game, Fisch heaped praise on the unit:

“I thought the whole offensive line played well, that’s why I gave the whole group a game ball. There’s tons of improvement that is going to happen between week one, week two, and week three. This in an interesting situation going from a Mountain West opponent that’s coming off eight wins, to an FCS opponent coming off 11 wins, to a bye week, and then the Apple Cup. These four weeks are all about improvement, for us to just keep getting better and better, so the offensive line set a good foundation all across the board. Now its going to be a matter of how good can we become this week, can we continue to become a physical and aggressive offensive line.”

Each of the Huskies’ offensive linemen received high grades for their performances in last Saturday’s game. The offensive line paved the way for UW’s ground game, which put up 283 rushing yards against Colorado State. Drew Azzopardi received the best grade of all the Huskies’ offensive linemen. Here is what Jedd Fisch said about Azzopardi’s performance:

“We worked really hard on his technique. We felt that after his first year as a full-time starter, he was going to be able to make a big jump, and I believe he has. On Saturday, I thought he had a very good game. I believe he either graded out the highest or second-highest in the whole offensive line. He finished blocks; he was taking guys and walking them back, which is always good to see.”

The improvement Drew Azzopardi showed in the Huskies’ first game from last year to now is remarkable. As the Huskies’ season goes on, Azzopardi’s play at right tackle will continue to be interesting to follow.

Fisch discusses defensive adjustments at halftime

When asked about his defense’s play in Saturday’s game, Fisch said he thought his guys adjusted well in the second half. He thought Colorado State presented them with different looks that his defense did not expect. Wildcat formation, jet sweeps, and counters were used effectively in the first half by Colorado State. Fisch also said the Huskies had linebackers playing together for the first time and that they needed more time to settle in and communicate better. At halftime, the coaches were able to discuss the different looks Colorado State’s offense was presenting, and the defense responded well in the second half.

D-Line held their own, Rahshawn Clark and Leroy Bryant continue to split time at nickel

In the second half of Saturday’s game, the Huskies’ defense allowed just 1.6 yards per carry. Clearly, the defense settled in and made the right adjustments to be successful in stopping the run. Fisch said even though the numbers did not show on the stat sheet, his D-Line contained their lanes well. Even when the defensive linemen were not making tackles, they held their gaps and battled through double teams. This allowed the linebackers to come up into the holes and make tackles. Overall, the defense had just three missed tackles in the game, which Fisch was proud of and wants to continue to build on.

Another interesting note about the defense was the number of reps each of the nickelbacks had in the game. Rahshawn Clark had 42 reps, while Leroy Bryant had around 20. Bryant started the game at nickel, and Fisch said they rotated each series. The difference in the number of reps was because five of the six series Colorado State went three-and-out; Bryant was in on those series. Clark made a crucial sack on 4th and 7 in Saturday’s game, when Colorado State made an audible out of their field goal formation to wildcat. Fisch says there will continue to be a rotation at nickel between Bryant and Clark based on the series and defensive package.
