Mariners ace Logan Gilbert among favorites to win 2025 Cy Young

Updated odds released for the 2025 AL Cy Young Award have the Seattle Mariners well-represented overall, with five pitchers in the top 20.

At the heart of the frustration surrounding the Seattle Mariners just missing the playoffs last year, was the fact they had the best rotation in baseball. Among other things, the starting five were collectively number one in the Majors with a 3.38 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, .222 batting average and 185 walks.

On an individual level, 2024 was a particularly special year for Logan Gilbert, as he earned the first All-Star Game selection of his MLB career. He finished the season first among all qualifying starting pitchers with 208.2 innings and a 0.887 WHIP, while producing a 3.23 ERA and career-low 3.27 FIP.

With this in mind, it should really come as no surprise that Gilbert is listed among the betting favorites to win the AL Cy Young Award this coming season. As per FanDuel Sportsbook, he is listed as tied-fifth favorite along with the New York Yankees’ Gerrit Cole and Pablo Lopez of the Minnesota Twins, with odds of +1600.

Mariners dominate top 20 AL Cy Young odds

Going back to the Mariners starters as a whole, FanDuel‘s odds in general are a testament to how special the rotation is in Seattle. George Kirby is tied-ninth favorite at +2000, while Luis Castillo is tied-11th at +2500.

Bryan Woo comes next at tied-16th with odds of +3000, while Bryce Miller closes out the Mariners connection, ranked 20th at +3500 to take home the 2025 AL Cy Young Award. No one comes close to their representation in the top 20, with the Yankees and Houston Astros next up at two each respectively.

Of the five in the Mariners rotation, we would contend Woo is the most enticing bet in 2025, assuming that he can remain healthy. He started 22 times, with his 2.89 ERA ranking best among the five and his 0.898 WHIP ranking second-best.

Of course, what really matters is team success, as the Mariners take aim at returning to the playoffs after falling just short two years in a row. Any awards which come along will be secondary — albeit a Cy Young is certainly a prestigious one — but make no mistake that the rotation will be pivotal to how the 2025 season plays out in Seattle.

Castillo the potential odd man out

One curveball (pun intended) in all of this could be what happens with Castillo, as per recent speculation the Mariners may trade him in exchange for a quality bat/infield help. It could also assist the ball club financially speaking, with him still having three years remaining on a contract which has an annual average salary of $24.15 million (base and bonus combined).

As much as the three-time All-Star is a quality pitcher, it is interesting that the Mariners’ most expensive starter was also the least productive among the five last year. His 3.64 ERA, 3.91 FIP and 1.169 are all fine enough, but they all ranked fifth in the Seattle rotation in 2025, which is not what’s expected when you’re being paid most on the ball club.

If Castillo is traded, it is assumed that Emerson Hancock will be in line to step in, which brings some uncertainty to the rotation situation. Selected sixth overall in the 2020 draft, he still has plenty of work to do, with a 4.75 ERA, 5.42 FIP and 1.335 WHIP in 15 Major League starts to date.

Do you have confidence in the Seattle Mariners repeating last year’s overall success with the rotation? Will they continue to be among the best in the Majors even if Castillo is traded? Let us know in the comments section below.
