Logan Gilbert earns a well-deserved first All-Star selection

Logan Gilbert is headed to the All-Star Game, after a first half of the season where he’s proved to be one of the best starters in the Majors.

The Seattle Mariners will not be well represented at this year’s All-Star Game in terms of numbers, but the one player guaranteed to go to Texas, is more than worthy. For the first time in his Major League career, Logan Gilbert is an All-Star.

The full rosters for the 94th All-Star Game Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas were unveiled on Sunday, including Gilbert. There might be an argument that other Mariners were worthy – specifically George Kirby and Andrés Muñoz — but at least they have some quality representation.

This has been Gilbert’s best start to a season yet in four Major League seasons, with him on course for a whole host of career-best. As a qualified starter, this includes ranking tied-first with 14 quality outings, third with a 0.918 WHIP and 117.2 innings pitched, as well as tied-sixth with a .199 opposing batting average.

There has been a lot of discussion about how the Mariners rotation in general has been faring better at home compared to on the road so far in 2024. However, this doesn’t extend to Gilbert, who has been extremely consistent whether at T-Mobile Park or on his travels.

Gilbert sees his dream come true

The 2018 14th overall draft pick was understandably delighted to be selected for the All-Star Game. As per Cameron Van Til of Seattle Sports, he said:

“It’s just a dream come true. It’s something I’ve always dreamt of as a kid. I was really hoping it would happen eventually and felt like I had a decent chance this year, so I’m just really excited.”

After being told of his selection, Gilbert called his family to let them know. He said:

“My wife started screaming and my parents got a little choked up, so that was a pretty special moment for how much they’ve been through with me in this entire baseball journey.”

Part of what makes the 27-year-old so good, is that he has continually pushed himself and improved as the 2024 season has progressed. In June, he joined Hisashi Iwakuma as the only pitchers in Mariners history to notch 30+ strikeouts and one or fewer walks in a single month.

The All-Star Game will take place on July 16, beginning at 5 p.m. PT. Thanks to Gilbert, Mariners fans will have a good reason to tune in and watch the action.

There’s little doubting Gilbert deserved to be named to the All-Star Game. However, which other Mariners — if any — do you think should have also been making the trip to Texas? Let us know in the comments section below.
