Another slow start, a lack of execution when it mattered, and sloppy play on all three phases of the game saw the Seahawks lose a third straight game. After vowing to commit to the run game, the Seahawk’s ground attack fell short once again. The team had 52 rushing yards on 20 attempts. Ken Walker III did have 14 of the team’s 20 attempts but averaged just 2.3 yards a carry. To make matters worse, quarterback Geno Smith struggled under constant pressure, threw two interceptions, and completed 30 of 52 passes for 312 yards.
DEFENSE HAD ITS ISSUES
It would be unfair to blame the loss solely on the offense. The defense continues to have difficulty stopping the run. The Niners rushed for 228 yards, with Issac Guerendo leading the way with 10 carries for 99 yards. Making matters worse, Guerendo came in relief for starter Jordan Mason, who was hobbled by a shoulder injury and still managed to rush for 73 yards on nine carries. There is really no way around it. The Seahawks did not get the job done despite the best of intentions. The NFL, as everyone know, is a results-driven league, and the Seahawks have been coming up short .
“Look, it stings. It stings to have lost three in a row, to lose it against your division rival at home, primetime, such a great environment. Guys fought their tails off down to the last minute. But we’re not playing well enough to beat the team we needed to beat, ” said head coach Mike Macdonald after the game . ” The message to the team is that we have the people in the building. Our players, our coaches, to become a really good football team. Right now, we’re just coming up short. That’s obvious based the off tape and what’s going on.”
PRODUCTIVE THIRD QUARTER
The offense came to life in the third quarter with an exceptional special teams play by Lavisha Shenault, who returned a kickoff for 97 yards for the Seahawk’s first touchdown. Shenault’s return answered the scoring drive at the start of the second half. The Niners took the second-half kickoff and marched 70 yards on new plays for the 23-3 lead. A defensive stop returned the ball to the offense with their best game drive. A 13-play 97 drive capped off by a Walker III one-yard run brought the Seahawks within six points at 23-17. The teams traded punts, and the Seahawks looked like they were on their way to a comeback when the offense trotted back on the field with 9:27 left in the game.
The Seahawks started the drive at their three-yard line due to a special teams error. Smith completed three consecutive passes: one to Tyler Lockett and back-to-back completions to DK Metcalf, which brought the ball to the Seahawks’ 25-yard line. Disaster struck on the next play. Tight end AJ Barner was called for offensive holding, and the offense was pushed back ten yards. On first and twenty, Smith threw an errant pass intended for Metcalf, which was intercepted by the Niner’s Renardo Green.
UNABLE TO CLOSE OUT THE GAME
The Niners converted the gift and extended their lead when Brock Purdy found George Kittle for a nine-yard touchdown. The Niners attempted a two-point conversation, which failed. Smith engineered another scoring drive. A 15-play 70-yard drive ending with a nine-yard pass to Tyler Lockett brought the Seahawks within five points at 29 to 24 with 1:44 left in the game. The Niners received the ball and started their offensive possession at the 19-yard line. The Seahawks had a glimmer of hope with three timeouts left. Those hopes were dashed when Guerendo rambled 76 yards down the right side on first down. Kyle Juszcyk’s six-yard ramble into the endzone sealed the victory for the Niners and saw the Seahawk’s record fall to 3-3
As for whats next for the Seahawks Macdonald is confident the team is heading in the right direction and will turn things around sooner than later.
“You can’t fix everything overnight. You’ve got to pick one thing at a time. You’ve got to be really surgical in our approach, positive. There (are) good things on tape. The effort was there. The guys are trying to play physical. Trying to play the right way. We’ve got to look at what we’re asking and how we’re coaching it and how teams are attacking us, and then go from there. That’s really just going to be the thought. Kind of like a mini bye week so going to be looking at ourselves a lot over the next few days and then go back to work on Monday.”
