The Washington Huskies turned up the intensity during the offseason to take big steps forward as they look to improve their defense from a year ago. Allowing 18.7 points a game in 2025, the Huskies ranked 21st in total defense and 15th in scoring defense across the nation.
It All Starts In The Trenches
The Dawgs ranked 5th in the Big Ten, with the defense recording 7 sacks as a whole, led by Jacob Lane, who had 4. 17-year-old Freshman Ramzak Fruean is one of the most anticipated prospects heading into the season that the Huskies are hoping bolster the defensive front significantly. Ramzak brings an element of physicality and athleticism that will only help his defensive teammates around him. In 2025, Ramzek earned Class 4A South Puget Sound League South Co-Player of the Year, after he registered 6 sacks, 9 tackles for loss and 3 interceptions on defense.
The Learning And Growth Of The Players
The violence in the trenches is the calming of the storm with the linebackers and defensive backs. The biggest advantage that the Huskies have this year at the linebacker in defensive back position is leadership. 5th-year linebacker Jacob Manu is a good example of a player with leadership, as he registered many tackles in the past and gained critical knowledge of what it takes to be a linebacker at the highest level. A player like Edge Prospect freshman Derek Colman-Brusa, who is an athletic freak who is ready to showcase his talent at the highest level, could benefit from a guy like Manu. Having all the knowledge of these veterans definitely helps the younger players learn the game at an effective rate, as those nuggets of information can stick for several years, and they can pass it down to the next generation of players
