Since the four former Pac-12 teams (UCLA, USC, Oregon, and Washington) joined the Big Ten in the 2024 season, home-field advantage has been turned up to 11. The time-zone differences have given teams a major boost in front of their home crowds, especially for a west coast team like Washington.
On Saturday, Washington (3-0) kicks off Big Ten play against Minnesota (2-1) at 8:00 pm, but for Minnesota, it’ll feel like 11:00 pm. The time difference, along with a crowd full of students in a blackout theme, will give the Huskies a massive home-field advantage come kickoff on Saturday.
Washington head coach Jedd Fisch made it a point during his Monday press conference to announce to Huskies’ fans the need for a sell-out crowd on Saturday:
“Fans should be in full force. I expect it to be sold out, packed, loud, party atmosphere,” Fisch said. “Hopefully our guys, our fans, will embrace the moment of Saturday night and have a great evening.”
Minnesota has yet to play a game on the west coast as late as 8:00 pm. The closest it has gotten was a 7:30 pm kickoff against Cal in 2025. That did not bode well for Minnesota. Cal handled Minnesota 27-14 with Cal out-scoring Minnesota 10-0 in the fourth quarter.
Conversely, Washington hasn’t played a team in the eastern time zone at late as 8:00 pm since joining the Big Ten; however, UW has faired exceptionally well when eastern time-zone teams travel to Husky Stadium.
HUSKIES RECORD VS EAST COAST TEAMS
Washington is 3-1 against teams from the east at Husky Stadium since 2024 with its only loss coming against No. 1 Ohio State in 2025. Expand UW’s record to all teams coming to Husky Stadium since 2024 and its record improves to 11-2.
Without even comparing the schemes, rosters, and coaching staffs, Washington comes into the game on Saturday with an advantage. Despite the disappointing start to the season, the Huskies could very well come out with a season-changing performance on Saturday on the backs of over 70,000 Washington faithful in the cold and dark hours of the Washington night.
“I’m definitely excited, first night game in front of our fans, and I just can’t wait to get after it,” right tackle Drew Azzopardi said.
