6) NBA expansion and the possible return of the Sonics
It seems fair to surmise the majority — if not all — of Sonics fans have never gotten over their beloved team leaving in 2008, as it left a huge whole in the Seattle sports market. In this respect, whether you want to call it a state of ongoing denial or something similar, there still remains hope that someday the beloved team will return to Seattle.
If anything, this hope has only strengthened recently as a result of comments made by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver during the week leading up to Christmas. Whereas previously Silver played down the prospect of expansion, he admits the league is now taking a serious look at adding new teams.

For lack of a better word, there is some irony in these comments. There is no denying Silver and the league’s owners have been spurred on by the financial devastation the NBA and other other professional sports leagues have suffered, as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
It will be interesting to see how this storyline plays out during the coming 12 months; the longer the virus remains an issue, the more desperate the NBA will become to improve their financial situation. This is where expansion comes in and you have to believe Seattle will be at the top of the list when it comes to potential contenders, not least because of the size of the market and a new arena which was renovated with NBA basketball in mind.
