5) The Storm’s challenge for WNBA history
Fair or not, the Storm will never experience the level of support enjoyed by the likes of the Seahawks, Mariners and Sounders. However, they still deserve the utmost respect for what they have achieved ever since joining the WNBA in 2000.
One such person who recognizes the Storm’s achievements is Sounders’ head coach Schmetzer. As reported by Jeremiah Oshan of Sounder at Heart, Schmetzer recently said:
“I would be remiss not to say the Storm. People are talking about dynasties; we have a dynasty right here in the city of Seattle.”
When the Storm won the WNBA Finals last season, it put them level at the top of the all time list with four championships, alongside the Houston Comets — who no longer exist — and the Minnesota Lynx. Another successful season would see Seattle make WNBA history and become the first ever franchise to win five championships.
With two titles in the last three years, the Storm know what it takes to reach the pinnacle. And with the likes of Jewell Loyd and Breanna Stewart on the roster — along with the hopeful return of Sue Bird — they are well-placed to win it all again in 2021.
