Seahawks solidify initial 53-man roster

The Seattle Seahawks announced their initial 53-man roster on Sunday to meet the league mandate deadline. Per NFL rules all  32 teams were required  to trim their 90-man training camp roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players  by   6:00 p.m. ET Sunday

To get  to the initial 53 the Seahawks waived several, and designated other to the injured reserve list. The team cut vested veteran players: S D’Anthony Bell, CB Trevon Diggs, T Bobby Hart, CB Noah Igbinoghene, RB Velus Jones Jr., S Rodney Thomas II, TE Nick Vannett, and WR Cody White. The vested veteran designation means players do not have to clear waivers before being signed to the practice squad if the team and player reach an amendable agreement. Putting several veterans on the practice squad is a strategy that General Manager John Schneider used to keep converted players from being exposed on the waiver wire.

“Having the six veterans on the practice squad has enabled us to not expose certain players to the waiver wire. It’s a strategy for the initial 53 cut, and then as well as what we are going to look like in the middle of October, and then try to be strong as we possibly can and deep as we possibly can, with a combination of older and younger players down the stretch, you know, end of November, December, January, and hopefully February,” Said Schneider after the teams Sunday practice session.

Per NFL rules, a player with fewer that four accrued season can be claimed of waiver by the other 31 teams. Running back Zach Charbonnet was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, meaning he will miss the first four games of the season.

WAIVED PLAYERS

The team also cut ties with the following players for the time being, some of whom had decent training camps but were caught up in the numbers game.

Waived were T Logan Brown,CB Michael Dansby,T Kellen Diesch, DT Deven Eastern, S AJ Finley, CB Andre Fuller,LB Jalan Gaines, WR Emmanuel Henderson Jr.,WR Julian Hicks, S Maxen Hook, DE Aidan Hubbard,LB Jared Ivey, S Tysheem Johnson,RB Justin Jones,LB Marvin Jones Jr., C Federico Maranges, WR Rashad Rochelle, DT Uso Seumalo , LB Jamie Sheriff, DT J.R. Singleton, DT Bubba Thomas, CB Jordan Washington, WR Ricky White III.RB Jacardia Wright . In addition to the above players, linebacker Power Echols, T Amari Kight, FB Brock Lampe, and LB Aaron Smith were waived due to injuries. WR Irvin Charles was waived due to injury but was expected to return.

 NFL  PRACTICE SQUAD RULES

Players cannot agree to be placed on the practice squad until Monday, August 31st, per NFL Rules.

Roster Size: The practice squad consists of 16 players as of 2026. However, teams can sign 17 players to their practice squads if one of those players is a member of the NFL’s International Pathway Program.

Eligibility: The rules for roster size and eligibility for the Practice Squad were amended by the NFL and NFLPA in May 2022. Players with no accrued seasons and those with fewer than nine regular-season games in their lone accrued season are eligible for the practice squad. Teams can also have a maximum of 10 players who have accrued no more than 2 seasons. Each team may have up to six players on the practice squad, with unlimited accrued seasons. However, the number of players in the last two categories cannot exceed 10 players combined.

FEELING CONFIDENT ABOUT TEAM

With the first player-personnel hurdle out of the way, Schneider believes in the depth of the current team and in some players who could make an impact in the near future.

“ We feel solid about it, but with that position, you can never have enough guys all the way through. We’ve been in spots before where we’ve been stuck and signing a guy from the practice squad, two weeks here and elevating,” said Schneider.  We want to have guys who have been in the system for a long time and who the coaches feel comfortable playing in games. With Avery (Smith), he’s a system fit. He’s been in the same system now for the whole spring and everything. Talking with those guys, he’s a comfortable guy. Ted Thompson would say, ‘You’ve got to have one in the chamber all the time and ready to go.’”
