After weeks of only tackling teammates and chomping at the bit to tackle different jersey colors than purple and gold, the Washington football team capped a long fall-practice season with a intersquad scrimmage at Fan Fest on Saturday, putting them one step closer to popping enemy pads.
Although no real score was kept in the scrimmage, it did gives fans a sign of what Washington football will look like for the first time since the spring game.
“[I’m] glad the mock game is done, and now we have to get on with preparation for the Apple Cup and for Washington State,” head coach Jedd Fisch said.
Sophomore quarterback Demond Williams Jr. took the helm with the first-team offense to start the game. Surrounding Williams on the offensive line were freshman Kodi Greene at left tackle, fifth-year senior Drew Azzopardi at right tackle, sophomore John Mills, and seventh-year senior Geirean Hatchet at guard, and Sam Houston senior transfer Kolt Dieterich at center.
Senior Christian Moss, redshirt junior Rashid Williams, and sophomore Chris Lawson were the receivers, with Williams and redshirt freshman Quaid Carr as the running backs.
Neither sophomore receiver Dezmen Roebuck (personal reasons) or senior running back Jayden Limar (injury) participated in the scrimmage — both are presumed starters at their respective positions.
In the shortened three-period scrimmage, Carr immediately stole the show. The running back broke off back-to-back long runs including a 50-plus yard touchdown carry.
Moss, Williams, and Lawson all collected receptions including a contested touchdown grab from Williams to Moss. Freshman running back Brian Bonner Jr. also touched paydirt on a short carry.
Sophomore tight end Baron Naone hauled in a long post-route from Williams, and the reliable junior tight end, Decker DeGraff recorded several grabs.
The first-team offense hummed for much of the scrimmage, but the defense was able to make a few plays as well. The loudest defensive play of the night came courtesy of redshirt junior corner Emmanuel Karnley who blasted freshman receiver Mason James on a screen pass. James was slow to get up and left the scrimmage after the hard hit.
Washington fans also got good looks at two impact freshman on the defensive side of the ball — Derek Colman-Brusa and Ramzak Fruean. Colman-Brusa recorded a sack and Fruen produced consistent pressure on his pass-rush reps.
“Ramzak’s going to start for us, there’s no question about that,” Fisch said.
Another freshman, nickelback Ksani Jiles, provided the most impactful defensive play of the day with a pick-six on redshirt freshman quarterback Treston “Kini” McMillan.
Defensive lineman redshirt sophomore Kai McLendon and redshirt senior defensive end Isaiah Ward both missed the scrimmage due to injury, but Fisch was adamant that both will be ready for practice on Monday.
“I think we got through camp [relatively healthy], and we’re getting everybody back at the right time, so we should have everyone back, or close to it starting for practice on Sunday Morning,” Fisch said.
On special teams, redshirt junior kicker Tyler Robles missed his first attempt of the night from 35-yards out, but found his footing and drilled both a 49 and 33-yard try later in the scrimmage. Redshirt sophomore nickelback Rahshawn Clark returned punts in Roebuck’s absence. Clark muffed his first opportunity, but settled in the rest of the night.
After receiving an extra year of eligibility and joining the roster, defensive lineman Ta’ita’i Uiagalelei and kicker Grady Gross both did not participate in the scrimmage.
“If they can come back, they come back,” Fisch said regarding Uiagelelei and Gross. “Right now they can practice with us, there’s no rule against that, so we will have both of those guys practicing with us if that’s what they choose to do, and then we’ll go from there,”
Washington now has two weeks to get healthy and prepare for the Apple Cup on Sunday, September 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Husky Stadium.
