Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh is progressing, and the organization is contemplating the next move for the All-Star Catcher. Raleigh hit 30 pitches ( 15 from each side) at moderate speed in Arizona on Friday, then joined his teammates for the weekend series with the Diamondbacks. For Raleigh, who landed on the disabled list for the first time in his career, the ordeal seems like a movie.
“Once I got to Arizona, it was kind of like the acceptance stage, I guess. And once I got there, I was able to accept it, kind of, and realize to try to get back as quickly as I can and control what I can control,” Raleigh said. “It’s really hard watching the games on TV, but it’s weird watching it, you not being there, it’s just like a ‘Twilight Zone’ kind of feeling. I think it makes you appreciate it a little more when you’re that far away.”
Because of that deep appreciation and his competitive attitude, Raleigh is dead set on returning as soon as he can without rushing every step in the rehab process.
NEXT STEPS ARE WAIT AND SEE
Raleigh met with the training staff on Sunday morning to carve out his routine for the next couple of days and get an idea of where to go next in the rehab process. The training staff hopes to have a clear idea by Wednesday.
“I’m hoping by Wednesday to have a better idea of where we’re at and what the schedule is, as far as rehab games and where I’m at with that,” he said. “Obviously, day by day it can change, and that’s just how it is, unfortunately.
DONOVAN PROGRESSING
Also progressing from an injury is Brendan Donovan, who landed on the IL with a left groin injury. Donovan is running on an anti-gravity treadmill, hoping to transition to baseball running drills next week. Those drills will likely start with straight-line running, then progress to cutting and eventually baseball game movements. He’s also set to fly to Seattle, likely when the Mariners go back out on the road.
