Mariners reaping the benefits of a fully motivated Randy Arozarena

The Mariners lineup has been inconsistent, but arguably their best offensive weapon has been a player who’s likely gone after this season.

The Seattle Mariners will be the first to admit their collective offensive threat hasn’t been good enough so far in 2026. It doesn’t help when the so-called “Big 3” of Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodríguez and Josh Naylor have struggled for consistency, albeit M’s fans are used to slow starts from Rodríguez specifically. (Although ironically he’s been the most productive of the trio.)

Heading into Wednesday’s third of four games in Houston versus the Astros, the Mariners are ranked 24th in the majors with a .231 batting average, 17th with a .700 team OPS and tied-19th in scoring 4.19 runs per contest. Not that there haven’t been some impressive performances in the lineup, including from the likes of Luke Raley, Brendan Donovan and Dominic Canzone.

However, perhaps most impressive of all has been the play of Randy Arozarena, with him standing out as the most dangerous offensive threat in this Mariners lineup. Now yes, his form out in left field has at times left something to be desired, but there’s no denying his impact at the plate.

Leading the Mariners in a host of offensive categories

Arozarena leads the Mariners in several categories, including a .303 batting average, .389 OBP, 10 stolen bases, six hit-by-pitches and a 147 OPS+. He’s also showing more patience at the plate with a 23.3 strikeout rate which would be the lowest of his career since his first year in 2019, when he only played in 19 games for the Rays.

Tuesday’s 10-2 road win against the Astros saw Arozarena take it to another level, with his best ever game in a Mariners uniform. He got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the top of the second and by the time he was finished, he’d gone 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI, a hit-by-pitch, one stolen base and three runs.

Now we always knew Arozarena was capable of this level of productivity, just based on a resume which includes being an ALCS MVP, two All-Star Game selections and holding the major league record for the most home runs in a single postseason. However, what’s inspired him to show the best version of himself this year with the Mariners?

Randy Arozarena is playing for his next contract

Well, pure and simple it’s a contract year for Arozarena, who’s more than likely playing his final season in Seattle. Any concern — warranted or not — about the potential for lingering resentment following “Handshakegate” with Raleigh hasn’t materalized, with the mercurial 31-year-old focused on securing a new contract with a club for next season and beyond.

Even allowing for the prospect of a looming lockout by the owners, Arozarena is putting himself into a prime position to be one of the top free agent hitters once the 2026 season concludes. And despite the aforementioned reference to his sometimes lackadaisical defense, his 1.8 bWAR is eighth amongst all outfielders.

When Arozarena plays like he is at the moment, you almost want the Mariners to try and find a way to bring him back next season. However, aside from the reality he’ll be an expensive proposition, he’s not always going to be as motivated as he is right now, so it’s best for the fanbase to just enjoy him while he’s still here.
