Can Sounders Prove Last Win Against Quakes Was No Fluke?

Wednesday’s match between Western Conference leaders San Jose Earthquakes (9-1-2, 29pts) and the fourth-place Seattle Sounders (6-1-3, 21pts) will be a litmus test for both teams. Each has something to prove. The Quakes’ only loss this season was a 1-0 home defeat to the Sounders.  Calling it a revenge game might be  a bit extreme; payback is a more appropriate term.

“We messaged it quite a bit this week.  They’ll be up for the game because of what happened down there,   Sounder head coach Brian Schmetzer.” Because, you know, they statistically and physically outplayed us. They were in our half a lot. And we squeaked out a one-nothing win. “

For the Sounders, the game is a chance to prove the 1-0 win over the Quakes was not a fluke and that they can not only compete but beat the best in the West. In between the Sounders and  Quakes are LAFC ( 6-3-3, 21pts) and Vancouver Whitecaps( 8-2-1, 26pts).

I’m sure Bruce( Arena  Quakes Head Coach) is gonna say, Hey, we owe these guys and our players know that Vancouver and LAFC  are at the top,” Schmetzer added.

 A MATCH OF CONTRASTING STYLES

To ascend to the top of the standings, the Sounders will need to score goals.  The  Rave Green have scored 14 goals, which is the third  worst in the Conference behind  Sporting KC eight and  St Louis ten. Both of those teams are 14th and 15th in the Western Conference standings. To score goals the Sounders must be creative, dynamic, and clinical in their finishing.

“ There is a technical, mental and tactical side to  scoring goals Schmetzer, said.”  There is the shooting from distance, which then draws defenders out and opens up more space in the middle.”

DEFENSE HAS KEPT THEM IN EVERY GAME

What Seattle does have is the best defense in the league.  The Sounders have conceded a league low  six goals. The Whitecaps have allowed one more goal than seven, and the Quakes have allowed just eight goals and are tied with Vancouver for the most goals scored in the conference with 27. If the Sounders pull off the season sweep against the Quakes, they will need to not only play a full 90 minutes but a smart 90.
