Mariners extend Colt Emerson and now the waiting game begins

The Mariners have signed top-rated prospect Colt Emerson to a long-term lucrative deal, but how soon will he actually play in the majors?

Just as with Cal Raleigh ahead of last season, there was no indication a deal was coming so soon with Colt Emerson. As such, there was plenty of surprise on Tuesday morning when FanSided‘s Robert Murray reported that the Mariners had signed their top-rated prospect to a long-term extension.

The deal is for eight years and worth $95 million, making it the largest contract ever signed by a player yet to make their Major League debut. It also includes a ninth-year club option, a full no-trade clause and escalators that can bring it north of $130 million.

The contract will begin as soon as the Mariners make it official, which is expected to be by Wednesday morning at the latest after Emerson has undergone a physical. As per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, if he makes his Major League debut this year and accrues a full year of service time, the deal will buy up his three years of pre-arbitration, three years of arbitration-eligibility and up to three years of free agency if the club option is exercised.

Colt Emerson’s Major League debut still not imminent despite new deal

Now, Mariners fans will play the waiting game when it comes to Emerson actually making his Major League debut. In reality his massive deal changes nothing in this respect, with the organization preferring not to rush him as he continues his development in Triple-A Tacoma.

The thinking among many of the prominent baseball media members in Seattle is that Emerson will likely get his greatly anticipated call-up sometime around mid-season. The only ways this timeline would be shortened, will be through significant and relevant injuries and/or loss of form in the infield.

Emerson is being prepared to take over from J.P. Crawford as the long-term shortstop, but has also seen playing time at second and third base in the minors. Crawford is likely in his final season with the Mariners and is currently out with right shoulder soreness, but is projected to join the team on their first road trip of the season this coming Friday.

Mariners taking the necessary steps to make themselves a long-term genuine contender

Selected 22nd overall in the 2023 draft, Emerson’s rise through the farm system has been impressive, with him making an immediate impression last year in his first exposure to Triple-A, batting .364 with a 1.172 OPS in six games. So far in 2026 he’s hitting .357 with a 1.000 OPS through three games and the clamor for his call-up will only grow if he continues to produce at a similar level.

The Mariners have been down a similar road before, signed Evan White to a six-year, $24 million deal back in 2019 prior to his Major League debut. The Mariners and their fans will of course be hoping things turn out better with Emerson, with White winning a Gold Glove early on before being beset with injuries and poor productivity, eventually leading to a trade to the Braves following the 2023 season.

This is the type of signing which helps the Mariners continue to look like an inviting destination for Major League players, with Emerson joining the likes of Raleigh, Julio Rodríguez and Josh Naylor on long-term deals. Now thoughts turn to who the front office will get extended next, with Logan Gilbert and Bryan Woo at the top of the list.
