The Mariners’ ever-growing list of injuries to key personnel means Colt Emerson will make his Major League debut earlier than ideally wanted.
Sunday has already proven to be an interesting day in Seattle ahead of the Mariners’ series finale versus the Padres. An injury to Brendan Donovan has led to the decision to call up Colt Emerson from Triple-A Tacoma, who will make his Major League debut on Sunday Night Baseball of all stages.
With the Mariners off to an indifferent start to the 2026 season, plenty within the fanbase has been calling for Emerson to get his chance in the majors. However, as much as the organization would have preferred to give him more time in Tacoma to develop, their hand has effectively now been forced by Donovan’s ongoing issues.
The Mariners have already dealt with more than their fair share of injuries to key players this season, including the likes of Cal Raleigh, Victor Robles, Matt Brash and Gabe Speier. Now though, Donovan is headed to the 10-day Injured List for a second time with his left groin muscle strain (retroactive to May 16), opening the door for Emerson to get his chance.
Emerson has had a promising start to his season in Triple-A Tacoma, batting .255 with a .816 OPS and playing strong defense. As a result he’s seen his standing among all Major League prospects continue to grow, moving up to number three in Baseball America‘s top 100 rankings and number six according to MLB Pipeline.
Colt Emerson stepping in for Brendan Donovan at third base

When Emerson makes his Major League debut, he will be the youngest Mariners player to do so since Félix Hernández on Aug. 4, 2005 at the age of 19 years and 118 days. (Emerson is 20 years old and 301 days as of Sunday.) With the Mariners determined to keep J.P. Crawford at shortstop — at least for now — he will replace Donovan at third base.
It has already been an eventful year for Emerson, who signed an eight-year, $95 million deal at the end of March. This is the largest contract ever handed out to a player yet to make his Major League debut, which remains the case as Konnor Griffin’s own nine-year, $140 million deal wasn’t made official until after he had played for the Pirates.
In terms of the Mariners ideally not wanting to call up Emerson just yet, it’s interesting that he was not scratched from the Rainiers’ lineup on Sunday until just before first pitch at 1:25 p.m. PT. Not that the organization doesn’t think he can succeed right away in Seattle; rather that just wanted to give him extra time to work on certain aspects of his game.
As for Donovan, the Mariners will of course be hoping he doesn’t miss much time, with him being one of their best bats as evidenced by hitting .274 with a .839 OPS and 144 OPS+. Unfortunately for the club he’s struggling to play regularly due to lingering effects from offseason surgery for a sports hernia, with the hope that he will be back within two/three weeks.
