Seahawks reportedly hire Brian Fleury as new OC

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald must have been highly impressed with former Niners run-game coordinator and tight ends coach Brian Fleury’s interview on Saturday night.  When former Offensive Coordinator Klint Kubiak interviewed and was offered the Las Vegas head coaching job, McDonald indicated he would fill Kubiak’s vacancy with an internal candidate.

 DOMINOES FALL  QUICKLY

During his weekly radio show on 710 ESPN on Monday morning, Macdonald had indicated he was leaning towards hiring from within the Seahawks organization.

“I think a really important part of what we want to do is have continuity,” and the odds would still seem to point to the Seahawks likely promoting one of the four internal candidates,” said Macdonald.

At the time, the internal candidates were quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, passing game coordinator Jake Peetz, assistant offensive line coach/run game specialist Justin Outten, and tight ends coach Mack Brown.

It appeared Macdonald would stick to his plan on Friday, when the team blocked the Raiders from interviewing Outten for a similar role.  The hire within plan turned dramatically Saturday night when  Fleury interviewed with Macdonald and was offered the OC position.

FAMILIAR WITH THE OFFENSE

Hiring Fleury will bring continuity to the Seahawks’ running game. Fleury spent the last seven seasons with the 49ers after joining Kyle Shanahan’s coaching staff in 2019 as a defensive assistant. From 2020-21, Fleury was elevated to offensive quality control coach, then to tight ends coach in 2022.  Last season, Fleury added the title of run game coordinator.

While he has no play-calling experience, Fleury is familiar with the Seahawks’ wide-zone run game, Sam Darnold, and Kubiak.   In 2023, Darnold was a backup quarterback, as was Kubiak, who was the Niners’ passing game specialist. In hiring Fleury, Macdonald lost Janocko to the Raiders.  Janocko will be the Raiders’ OC but will not be calling the offensive play-caller.

WORKED HIS WAY UP

A Maryland native, Fleury began his collegiate career as the Terrapins’ quarterback before transferring to Towson ( 1999-2002), where he finished his career. Fleury’s NFL coaching career began with the Buffalo Bills in 2013 as a quality control assistant, then moved to the Cleveland Browns the next year as assistant linebackers coach. In 2015, he moved to the role of outside linebackers coach before becoming the Miami Dolphins’ football research analyst in 2016.  From 2017-2019, Fleury served as the Dolphins’ director of football research.
