Sounders FC wraps up preseason with a pair of friendlies against Louisville City FC

The Sounders wrapped up their preseason with a pair of split-squad victories over USL Louisville FC on Sunday at the Providence Performance Center & Clubhouse. For Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer, Sunday’s matches marked the end of the friendly phase and the beginning of the regular season. With preseason stats, video review, and the eye test to gather data,  Schmetzer will spend the next seven days preparing for next Sunday’s home opener with the Colorado Rapids.

  CONFIRMING SQUAD ROTATIONS

Schmetzer and his staff had a pretty good idea of who the initial starting eleven would be, barring injuries. The first match between the Rave Green and  Louisville  FC gave a glimpse of Schmetzer’s probable lineup.  Andrew Thomas started in goal, with Alex Roldan and Nouhou as the left and right backs, and Jackson Ragen and Yeimar Gomez as the center backs. That five will surely start on February 22ndHassani Dolson and  Snyder Brunell occupied the two pivots.

Brunell stepped in for Cristian Roldan, who was ruled out of the contest due to an Achilles injury.  Dotson has been the perfect replacement for the departed Obed Vargas.  Jesus Ferreira and Jordan Morris started wide with  Albert Rusnak behind and Osaze De Rosario.

UPTEMPO AND ATTACKING

The first side was clean in their passing and cohesive in their defense. The units of ball movement gave Louisville all they could handle with runs inside and around the box.   Despite the lion’s share of possession and dominance, the Sounders had nothing to show until the 30th minute. De Rosario was brought down in the visitors’ penalty area. Rusnak converted the spot kick for the 1-0 lead.  Just before halftime, an old nemesis reared its ugly head when  Brunell was credited with an own goal on a corner kick just before halftime.

During the week, Schmetzer pointed out that the Sounders gave up too many set-piece goals last year.  When asked about Brunell’s transgression, Schmetzer said it was a learning moment for Snyder and something he could easily rectify.

CLINICAL FINISHING

After the restart, the Sounders stayed compact, moved the ball from side to side, but left some shots begging. Dotson showed his soft touches in the middle of the pitch, and Brunell showed his maturity by recovering from his first-half miscue with some clever passes up the line.  De Rosario showed his knack for scoring with a goal in the 83rd and 90th minutes to secure the  3-1 victory.  Danny Musovski scored a career-high 14 goals last year to lead the team in goals scored.  If the Sounders are to compete with the elite teams, they will need a hefty contribution from De Rosario, who will get plenty of first-team minutes.

SECOND MATCH NOT CONTEST

The second match between the two sides was a one-sided affair with the Sounders rolling over the visitors with a 5-0 victory. A victory was also expected given the depth and talent of the Sounders’ roster.  That depth and talent will be needed by the Sounders not just to make the playoffs but to make a deep run and win multiple trophies.
