Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald and General Manager John Schneider share a similar mindset. That similar mindset has led the Seahawks to playing for the Super Bowl in just two years. Player development and player acquisition have contributed to the Seahawks’ being the number-one scoring defense in the 2025 season.
MAN IN THE MIDDLE
The addition of Sam Darnold, DeMarcus Lawrence, Cooper Kupp, and Ernest Jones has had a dramatic impact on the synergy and performance of the Seahawks. On defense, no one player has made a bigger impact than Ernest Jones, who is completing his first full season with the Seahawks. The Seahawks acquired Jones in a midseason trade with the Titans.
Jones played the first six games with the Titans and ended the last ten with the Seahawks. Macdonald knew what he wanted in a Lineback and Schneider obliged with the trade. The Seahawks and Jones never looked back.
“I just think the biggest thing here I would say just the connection. You know, of course, I really can’t speak on the Titans too much,’ said Jones. “I was only there for like six weeks. But I think the connection, once I got in Seattle and the way those boys opened their arms to me was special.”
IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Jones first start as a Seahawk was against the Buffalo Bills on October 27th, and he tied a career high 15 tackles. In 10 games with the Seahawks, Jones finished the season with 92 tackles, two tackles for a loss, two quarterback hits, and one interception.
“ The whole reason our defense is able to do so much is because we have Ernest as our Mic Lineback,” said Mike Macdonald. Jones’ ability to put people in the right place has been one of the catalysts of the Seahawks ‘ ascension to being the top defense in the league.
COMPLEMENTARY DEFENSE
With a full offseason, Jones was able to better understand why Macdonald wanted the defense to operate. As a result, Jones had his best year as a pro. He was named 2nd team AP All-Pro and was the only player in the NFL with 100-plus tackles and five interceptions.
His five interceptions was tied the team high. Jones was drafted by the LA Rams in 2021 and spent three years before being traded to the Titans in 2024. The Rams and Titans deployed Jones as a rushing linebacker. With the Seahawks, he is both a rush and coverage linebacker.
“You know, I think that’s what they wanted me to do a lot with the Rams is rush to pass. They get me on back a lot, and you know, I was able to make a couple sacks. This year has been man in the middle. Not letting a lot of routes just get through,” said Jones
UPCOMING TASK
As for Sunday, Jones says the Seahawks will need to play good fundamental football against a well-balanced Patriots offense.
“They have a really good run attack, and both backs can run the ball and their quarterback is just as dangerous,’ said Jones. They have done a good job of keeping him upright. I think for us, it’s all about our scheme, you know, how we are able to go out there and affect the quarterback. You know, a big part of his game is getting him off the spot, and as a D -line linebacker pass rushes, we have to do that.”
