The Seattle Sounders continued their three-game unbeaten streak with a resilient 4-1 win over Saint Louis SC. The Sounders have collected seven points in their last three games. An eye-pleasing 3-0 win over Nashville at Lumen Field was followed by a gritty 1-1 tie at Colorado. Saturday night’s win was another eye-catching, crowd-pleasing win. Add head coach Brian Schmetzer to the list of individuals who were pleased with the team’s play.
“ That was a pretty entertaining match. I said that the other day when we played against Nashville, you know, we’re undefeated at home, but I think this game might have passed that and there was a lot of quality, uh twenty shots, inside the box, a lot, a lot of quality in the attacking third and I actually really enjoyed watching that game. “
A GOOD HALF
One would have had a difficult time guessing the game would turn out to be an entertaining affair. In the first half, both teams were stuck in their own half due to the pressing of the opposition. Neither team was able to string together consecutive passes to create momentum in a buildup. As a result, the game was choppy with the rare look at the goal but no sustained pressure on the attacking end.
A dubious penalty call in the 29th minute awarded the visitors a penalty kick, which St. Louis striker Marcel Hartel converted. Four minutes later, the Sounders were awarded a penalty of their own when Paul Rothrock was allegedly taken down in the box. Albert Rusnáck converted the kick to tie the game. The stalemate continued, and both teams headed to their respective locker rooms for the halftime break, tied 1-1.
SECOND HALF EXPLOSION
Twelve minutes into the second half, Schmetzer inserted Ryan Kent for Paul Rothrock on the left wingback. The former Fenerbahce and Rangers player showed his big game experience. His gliding touches down the flank created space inside for Obed Vargas and Rusnack, who was playing just below Striker Danny Musovski. The attacking movement of Kent, Vargas, and Rusnàck resulted in the goal of the night.
Alex Roldan collected Stefan Frei‘s kick-up field after an interception by St. Louis Conrad Wallem. Roldan then passed the ball to Vargas, who knocked it forward to Rusnàck, who passed it back to Obed, who then executed a give-and-go with Kent. The end result was Vargas’s game-winning goal.
“Anytime you can go from back to front, start with your goalkeeper, and you end with a goal, it means you’re doing something right, “said Schmetzer .
CONTINUING TO DO ALL THE RIGHT THINGS
With the 2-1 lead the Sounders had the wind at their back and smelled blood in the water. The Sounders ‘ free-flowing movements were not just limited to the left side of the field. Cristian Roldan anchored the middle of the pitch, which gave Pedro de la Vega room to roam in the final third. Georgi Minoungou replaced de la Vega in the 76th minute. Minoungou picked up where De la Vega left off. His movements created space in the box for Musoviski, who scored his fourth goal in four games in the 81st minute. Three minutes later Schmetzer inserted Osaze De Rosario for Musoviski and Jon Bell for Yeimar Gomez, who was sitting on a yellow card.
With a secure 3-1 lead, the crowd began making plans for after-game celebrations. The post-game celebration plans were turned into block party preparations when Nouhou scored his second goal since September 4th, 2022. Put it simply, the crowd went bonkers.
