When you lose your seventh consecutive MLS games, questions of trust undoubtedly creep in. There is a lot of soul-searching within the Sounders organization after their 2-0 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps ( 11-3-4). First, the damage: the loss to the Whitecaps saw the Cascadia rivals clinch the Cascadia Trophy and celebrate on the Sounders’ turf. While they did not celebrate at midfield, there was a lot of hooting and hollering in the visitors’ locker room. The second, and probably most disturbing, damage was the fans leaving the game early to show their disgust with the team. A more bitter reality came in the fact that, with the loss, the Sounders now sit in 11th place in the Western Conference with a (7-8-3) record.
TRUST IN SELF
Injuries have decimated the Sounders, and Sunday was no exception. Jesus Ferreira suffered a hamstring injury in the 36th minute and was replaced by Sebastian Gomez. Alex Roldan started the game at center back alongside Jackson Ragen due to injuries at the center back position. Injuries are a major issue for the Sounders and are a concern on multiple levels. The first level is a lack of trust in self. When self-doubt creeps in, it becomes difficult for players to be creative in their thoughts and movements.
The Sounders are second-to-last in the Western Conference in goals scored, with 20. On the defensive end, the Sounders are tied for third- or fourth-best with the Houston Dynamo, who have allowed 24 goals. Both goals the Sounders gave up against the Whitecaps were preventable, but a lack of belief in themselves and the system led to them.

LACK OF SYSTEM
A lack of self-belief by the Sounders players means there is a lack of belief in the system. That is not to say the players have lost faith in Brian Schmetzer. No matter the player, is on the field wearing the Sounders jersey, give maximum effort from a physical perspective. What’s missing is the belief that if I beat my man, my teammate will do the same, and we will execute the plan. Despite being outpossessed 53% to 47% and having zero shots on target, the Sounders stepped into the halftime break with all to play for, with a nil-nil scoreline. There was belief, trust, and resolve in how the Sounders defended.
LACK OF CREATIVITY
The lack of possession and trust led to the Sounders losing the ball on too many occasions. The Whitecaps’ high press stifled the Sounders, who were outpossessed 61% to 39%, with zero shots on target to the Whitecaps’ five. Being goal-dangerous takes courage, guile, belief, and resolve that you and your teammates will prevail. At the moment, none of those things are present when the Sounders are attacking. What is needed is a belief in self, teammates, and the system.
