Mariners stun Astros with dramatic comeback 7-6 walk-off win

Facing a demoralizing series loss, the Mariners instead showed mental fortitude with Randy Arozarena and Julio Rodríguez leading the way.

Things couldn’t have looked much worse for the Seattle Mariners in the middle of the eighth, with them trailing 5-0 to the Houston Astros. They were all but set to lose another series and sit all by themselves at the bottom of the AL West with a 4-9 record.

That the Mariners were even in position to lose the series shouldn’t have been the case, but they had somehow managed to lose in 12 innings the previous night. The lineup had done effectively nothing in the 2-1 loss on Tuesday, striking out 19 times and going just 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position.

However, something magical happened in the bottom of the eighth on Wednesday afternoon, to turn the game on its head. With the bases loaded and two outs, Randy Arozarena couldn’t have picked (much of) a better moment to hit his second career grand slam, to bring the Mariners to within 5-4.

Still, it seemed like too much of a mountain to climb, especially when the Astros made it 6-4 in the top of the ninth thanks to a wild pitch from Casey Lawrence. However, the Mariners were now galvanized and proceeded to load the bases again in the bottom of the inning.

J-Rod comes alive for the Mariners

This brought Julio Rodriguez to the plate and facing a moment of destiny, with him in a slump of just one hit in his previous 22 at-bats. So of course he also decided to break out at an optimum moment, hitting a double which brought Donovan Solano and Miles Mastrobuoni home and tied the game at 6-6.

Even at this point fans could be forgiven for believing their team was somehow going to come up short in extra innings, a la the previous evening. However, the Mariners still weren’t finished in the ninth as they once more loaded the bases.

That man Arozarena then came up to the plate again, proceeding to patiently work the count and earn the walk, which scored Rodriguez and gave the Mariners the dramatic 7-6 walk-off win. With it came the first series win this season for the M’s, and it was desperately needed.

In a fun bit of trivia from the team’s PR guru Alex Mayer, the Mariners became just the second ever team to recover from a 5-0 deficit in a game where they both hit a grand slam and have a walk-off walk. Making it even more funky is that the other team was the Minnesota Twins back in 2023, and their first two hitters in the order that day were Solano and Jorge Polanco.

Arozarena’s postgame comments

There have been times when critics have accused Arozarena of not being entirely focused, but even they have to accept this wasn’t the case on Wednesday afternoon. Speaking through an interpreter postgame, he said:

“I’m a guy that when things aren’t going right, I’m always trying to get everybody hyped up. I always see myself kind of like a motor, trying to pass the energy that I have to everyone else.”

As much as Arozarena was the main man in the rubber match, it speaks volumes that he still wanted to give due credit to the part Rodriguez played in the stunning comeback. He said:

“Julio, who wasn’t having the greatest series, came in and knocked one in right when everyone needed it, and that’s what good teams do. It doesn’t matter how you start, it’s how everyone comes in together to pull off a win.”

Rodriguez returned the compliment by similarly praising his teammate when speak to the media postgame. He said:

“Randy is always looking to light things up every time he steps on the field. He’s so electric, and he definitely came huge for us in that spot.”

As for his own part in the heroics, Rodriguez explained his mindset to the media in the bottom of the ninth, regarding his approach versus Astros reliever Bryan Abreu. He said:

“I just had put on a short, compact swing. (Abreu) was a really good reliever, and it was big situation like that, but that’s what I’m trying to do — put a solid swing and try to drive the ball, a little line drive back to the pitcher. Just try to square up.”

Mariners pitching concerns continue

That the Mariners were even in a hole in the first place, was down to Luis F. Castillo having a second consecutive poor start. He allowed six hits, five walks and four runs (three earned) in 4.0 innings and fans must be anxious for George Kirby to return as soon as possible.

However, this is still a team game and the pitching could just as easily point to the previous night, when they combined to not give up any earned runs in 12 innings but still lost. Ultimately what matters most is that the Mariners finally won a series, with it coming against an Astros team which has dominated the AL West for the majority of the past decade.

The Mariners do still have more questions than answers, with them not helped this week by losing both Víctor Robles and Ryan Bliss to injuries. Arozarena remains confident though, as he said:

“I know we have a good group. We do have a good group. And I know it’s early in the season, but the objective is October. I want to get back to October.”

The Mariners have Thursday off before returning to action on Friday in the first of an intriguing three-game series versus the Texas Rangers, who currently lead the AL West. The M’s starters have been set and you would like to think Bryce Miller, Bryan Woo and Logan Gilbert will be able to get the job done, especially at home.

Do you believe beating the Astros will provide the impetus for winning more consistently moving forward? Or are you more concerned about the issues which have plagued the Mariners so far in 2025? Let us know in the comments section below.
