When the Seahawks signed QB Sam Darnold, they sent a clear message he will be their starting QB going forward. Although the Seahawks have locked up their starting QB for 2025, they still need to add depth at the position. Backup QB Sam Howell is in the final year of his contract and will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2025 season. Howell also struggled in his lone appearance in 2024 against Green Bay, throwing 5/14, for 24 yards, and an interception.
Seahawks bring in QB Tyler Shough for top 30 visit
Recently, the Seahawks brought in QB Tyler Shough for a top 30 visit. Tyler Shough threw for 3195 yards, had a 62.7% completion rate, 23 TD and 6 INT in 2024 at Louisville. He also rushed for 733 yards and had 11 rushing TDs in his college career. He is one of the oldest prospects in the draft at 25 years old, but given his long college career, Shough has the experience to start right away. Shough would be a better backup option than Sam Howell. He has a second-round pick ceiling, with a fourth-round floor.
2025 NFL Draft light on QB prospects
In the 2024 NFL Draft, there were a record-tying six quarterbacks selected in the first-round. This draft expects to have just one or two QBs (Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders) selected in the first-round. Most of the QB prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft expect to go between rounds 3-5. Which is why Seattle decided to immediately sign Sam Darnold after trading QB Geno Smith once free agency started.
Seahawks recent history of drafting QBs
Recent draft history shows the Seahawks take the QB position seriously, as they have selected just one QB since 2012. They last took a QB in the 2018 NFL Draft when they selected Alex McGough with a seventh round pick at 220th overall. Seattle most notably drafted Russell Wilson in 2012 as a third-round pick after signing veteran QB Matt Flynn. Should the Seahawks select a QB in the third-round or later, their options besides Tyler Shough include: Quinn Ewers, Will Howard, Jalen Milroe, and Kyle McCord.
