Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald has hired Klint Kubiak as the team’s new offensive coordinator. Kubiak replaces Ryan Grubb, who was fired three weeks ago.
Kubiak was the New Orleans Saints’ offensive coordinator last season under Darren Rizzi and Dennis Allen. Allen was fired after a dismal 2-7 record, and Rizzi was named interim coach and finished the season. However, the Saints did not retain Rizzi, and they have not hired a head coach.
WORKED HIS WAY TO THE TOP
The Seahawks OC job will be the third go around for Kubiak, who worked his way up the college and professional ranks. Kubiak started his coaching career in the college ranks with Texas A&M University as an offensive quality control coach from 2010- 2012. His NFL coaching career started with the Minnesota Vikings in 2013 as the team’s quality control coach. In 2015, Kubiak returned to the college ranks and spent one year as the wide receivers coach at Kansas. Kubiak returned to the NFL in 2016 as an offensive assistant and replaced his father, Gary Kubiak as the Vikings OC after his retirement in 2021.
In 2022, Kubiak was rehired by the Broncos as their passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach under offensive coordinator Justin Outten and head coach Nathaniel Hackett. The Bronco’s offense struggled, and Kubiak was given the play-calling duties. In 2023, Kubiak was hired by the Niners Kyle Shanahan as the team’s passing game coordinator. Kubiak was named the Saints offensive coordinator in 2024
SEVERAL CANDIDATES
Kubiak was one of seven coaches who were interviewed for the Seahawks offensive coordinator. It is clear that Macdonald was thorough and patient while searching for the right fit after a philosophical difference with Grubb. In addition to Kubiak, the Seahawks interviewed Grant Udinski, assistant offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Vikings, Detroit Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley, former Chicago Bears interim coach Thomas Brown, former NFL QB and Tamp Bay offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, and Green Bay offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich and Ravens run game coordinator Travis Switzer.
WHY KUBIAK ?
Macdonald was looking for someone who could get the most out of the offensive line, which would result in a dominant running game with a complimentary pass game. In his time in the NFL, Kubiak worked with Kirk Cousins while in Minnesota, Russell Wilson in Denver, and Brock Purdy in San Francisco. Kubiak has shown he can work with a talented veteran quarterback and improve his skill.
