Geno Smith has a chance to play against Vikings

After watching the game film from Sunday’s 30-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Mike Macdonald was cerebral, determined, and ready to move on. One bit of good news from Sunday’s loss was the severity of Geno Smith’s knee injury, which he sustained in the third quarter.

“Yeah, so we’re fortunate. A lot of positive and optimistic signs come out of the tests. So Geno’s (Smith) a beast man. He is in here working out in the morning, working through it,’  said Macdonald. “  I mean I know he is still feeling it, but this guy’s tough as nails, and hopefully we’ll see him practice throughout the week with us being optimistic about him being ready for the game.”

Also injured in the game was starting center Olu Oluwatimi. The news for Oluwatimi was not as clear, according to Macdonald, who called his status day to day.  Smith was replaced by  Sam Howell, who struggled due to a continued poor performance by the offensive line and bad decision-making when he was in the pocket. Jalen Sundell replaced Oluwatimi at center.

OVER HYPED?

One of the biggest surprises in Sunday’s loss was the Seahawks’ lethargic start. The team was on an upward trend during its four-game win streak, which the Packers snapped. The Jordan Love-led Packers offense scored on all four of its first-half possessions. What surprised McDonald was his team’s lack of attention to detail.

“ We just weren’t as sharp as we needed to be to start the game. So disappointing that we have the two touchdown drives to start the game. Definitely expect us to play better in those scenarios, but our guys did respond, they did adjust, and they did play incredibly hard to the last snap,’ added Macdonald

The  defense settled down and made the adjustments that saw the Packers score just ten second-half points.  Macdonald was asked if the team, more specifically, the defense, was too hyped. Macdonald quickly brushed off the question, saying the team was excited and had the right intent for the occasion.

TREATING THE HIGH AND LOWS THE SAME

The loss to the Packers catapulted the Los Angeles Rams ahead of the Seahawks for the NFC West Division lead. Both teams have identical 8-6 records, but the Rams hold the tiebreaker after their  Week Nine 26-20 OT win over the Seahawks at Lumen  Field. The two teams will meet in SoFi to end the regular season. For the game to have meaning, the Seahawks will host the Minnesota Vikings ( 12-2 )  and the  Chicago Bears (4-10)  in week 17. So, with no time to dwell on the past, Macdonald and his staff will stick to how they have operated after a win and a loss.

We’ve been saying this from when we walked in the door about how we were going to operate, and I think we’ve done that. You’ve asked similar questions in the past about how you build trust, and I think it’s a consistency element to it and backing up what you say and how you’re going to operate. So, that’s what we’re trying to do. I think the guys see that,’ added Macdonald.
