The Mariners have fired Scott Servais after nearly nine years as manager and replaced him with former fan favorite Dan Wilson.
The Seattle Mariners have fired Scott Servais as manager, with the news first reported by Ken Rosenthal and Marc Carig of The Athletic. Since then, the Mariners have officially confirmed the move.
This is something which has been expected in recent days. More specifically, as the ball club progressed on a road trip where they finished 1-8, which included losing five of six games versus two sub .500 teams in the Tigers and Pirates.
As you’d expect, opinion is mixed on if this is the right decision by the Mariners. Some would have let Servais play the season out, while others believe something drastic needed to be done, to try and save the season.
The Mariners have experienced a stunning demise after the high point of being 44-31, with them since going 20-33, which was the second-worst record in the Majors over that time. Pending a dramatic recovery over the final 34 games, they will become the first ball club to have a 10-game lead in their division but ultimately not win it.
An attempt to save the season

There are plenty who would put the bulk of the blame elsewhere, including with ownership and Jerry Dipoto for a number of reasons. However, if the Mariners really wanted to make a move to try and save the 2024 season, it would seem firing Servais was the most logical decision at this juncture.
This season specifically, Servais has overseen a pitching staff which prior to Thursday’s slate of games leads the Major with a 3.53 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and .224 batting average. On the flip side however, the lineup has the poorest batting average, leads the league in strikeouts and has scored the fourth-fewest runs.
Seattle Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto spoke about the decision to relieve Servais of his duties. Via a press release, Dipoto said:
“I do want to thank Scott for all his efforts here in Seattle over the past nine seasons. He has poured his passion into the team and our community and I know I speak for the entire Mariners
organization in thanking him for his hard work.”
In respect of Servais’ overall tenure in Seattle, he is second in franchise history among Mariners managers, with 680 wins and a .514 winning percentage. However, for all his success, he only led the ball club to the playoffs on one occasion, in 2022.

Wilson becomes new Mariners manager
Servais will be replaced by Dan Wilson, who has no managerial experience at any level. Wilson played for the Mariners between 1994-2005, and is a member of their Hall of Fame.
Dipoto explained his reasoning behind bringing Wilson in to replace Servais. he said:
“We believe that we need a new voice in the clubhouse. Dan knows our team and has been a key member of our organization working with players at every level over the past 11 years. He is well respected within and outside of our clubhouse and we are confident he will do a great job in leading our group over the final six weeks of the season and moving forward.”
Wilson shared his thoughts abou the opportunity ahead of him. He said:
“I appreciate the faith that Jerry, Justin and the Mariners organization have placed in me and I’m eager to get to work. I believe this team is capable of playing great baseball this season and look forward to the opportunity to work with this group of players and coaches.”
Interestingly, as per Adam Jude of The Seattle Times, Baseball Hall of Famer Edgar Martínez will join the coaching staff for the remainder of the 2024 season, after the Mariners also let hitting coach Jarret DeHart go. Martínez was previously the Mariners’ hitting coach between 2015-18, and has been a special adviser for the ball club ever since.
There has been discussion of if Wilson will be a temporary manager or long-term replacement, but this is something to be determined at a later date. For now, the aim has to be on saving a Mariners’ season which at this point appears to be in free-fall.
As for Servais, it’s a shame to see him go, with the highlight of his time undoubtedly helping the Mariners end their 21-year playoff drought. Ultimately though, he is effectively taking the fall for a season which started with so much promise but now sees the ball club 5.0 games behind the Houston Astros at the top of the AL West and 7.5 games back of the final AL wild card spot.
