Mariners announce 2025 coaching staff including four new hires

The Mariners have confirmed their coaching staff for the 2025 Major League season, and fans will be delighted it includes Edgar Martinez.

Tuesday saw the Seattle Mariners officially confirm their Major League coaching staff for the 2025 season. The news was announced by Manager Dan Wilson, along with President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and Executive Vice President & General Manager Justin Hollander.

The 2025 campaign will represent Wilson’s first full season in charge of the Mariners, with the staff including four new hires and three role changes. However, we appreciate that what most people were interested in, was if Edgar Martinez would be back, and if so, what role he would undertake?

Martinez to oversee hitting strategy

Well, the good news for fans is that Martinez — as suspected — will indeed return, but not as hitting coach. He did not want to commit to the demanding schedule which comes with the position, so will instead take over as Senior Director of Hitting Strategy.

Given the success the Mariners lineup had after the Hall of Famer came into the fold, it is understandably hoped he will continue to exert his influence in the expanded role. However, his replacement as Hitting Coach will also be vitally important, in the form of Kevin Seitzer.

Seitzer spent the past 10 seasons with the Atlanta Braves and has 17 years experience in total, as a Major League hitting coach. The best example of his effectiveness came as recently as 2023, when the Braves had an MLB record .501 slugging percentage and tied another record with 307 home runs.

The 62-year-old played 12 seasons in the Majors himself. He was twice named an MLB All-Star and finished his career with a .295 batting average, 74 home runs, 613 RBI and a .780 OPS.

Seitzer will be joined in Seattle by Bobby Magallanes, who served as his Assistant Hitting Coach for the past four seasons in Atlanta and will continue in the same role with the Mariners. Interestingly, Magallanes has a history with the M’s organization, as they selected him in the 50th round of the 1989 MLB draft and he played three seasons for them in the Minors.

What about the rest of the Mariners coaching staff?

Eric Young Jr. and Louis Boyd have both been promoted by the Mariners, to First Base Coach and Major League Field Coordinator respectively. Manny Acta transitions back to Bench Coach, while Kristopher Negrón replaces him as the new Third Base Coach, but will also responsible for outfield play.

The Mariners have seven members of the staff returning in the same roles which they held this past season. These include:

  • Tony Arnerich (Bullpen Coach and Catching Instructor)
  • Trent Blank (Major League Coach and Director of Pitching Strategy)
  • Danny Farquhar (Assistant Pitching Coach and Pitching Strategist)
  • Perry Hill (Infield Coach)
  • Pete Woodworth (Pitching Coach)
  • Fleming Báez and Justin Novak (Bullpen Catchers)

Wilson and Dipoto happy with the staff

As you’d expect, Wilson is enthused about the coaching staff he has assembled for his first full year as Mariners manager. He said:

“I love the staff we have put together for 2025. Between the additions of Kevin, Bobby, Eric and Louis and the returning coaches, I believe we have the right mix of experience and energy to help prepare our players for a successful 2025 season.”

Dipoto is similarly delighted with how the coaching staff has shaped out. He said:

“I’m very pleased with the coaching staff we have assembled. This group is a great mix of both new and familiar faces, each of whom offers something unique in putting our players in the best position to succeed on a daily basis.”

It will be interesting to see how Dipoto interacts particularly with Wilson and Martinez, given that it was clear their offensive approach was a success after coming in when Scott Servais was fired. We predict the president of baseball operations will be flexible, when considering the pressure on him to succeed combined with reportedly only signing a short-term extension.

What is your opinion of the new coaching hires, specifically Seitzer? How confident are you in the impact of Martinez, given that he won’t be as heavily involved in the same way as during the final part of this past season? Let us know in the comments section below.
