Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is set to add an important piece to his coaching team. Mcdonal is expected to hire former defensive defense-line coach Aden Durde as the Seahawk’s defensive coordinator. Multiple outlets including ESPN and the Seattle Times have confirmed that Durde spoke with the Seahawks earlier this week. Part of the reason why Durde was available had to do with the fact that he was told he would not be the Cowboy’s next defensive coordinator.
DAN QUINN CONNECTION
The Cowboy DC job became vacant when Dan Quinn became the Commanders’ head coach. The Cowboys brought back Mike Zimmer as their DC leaving Durde the odd man out. Macdonald wasted no time in picking up Durde to lead the Seahawk’s defense. One can see why Durde was disappointed in not being the successor to Quinn in Dallas. Durde’s first full-time job as an assistant was with Quinn from 2018-20 as a defensive assistant in Atlanta. He became the outside linebackers coach and then moved with Quinn to Dallas in 2021.
In Dallas Durde was the defensive line coach for the last three years. What Durde’s exact duties with the Seahawks remain to be seen.
WHO WILL CALL DEFENSIVE PLAYS?
During his first press conference with Seattle media, Macdonald was asked if he would be calling the defensive plays.
“Yeah, right now the plan is I’ll be calling the plays. Now, depending on who the defensive coordinator is and when that becomes — ultimately, I’m the head coach of the football team, so I want to coach the football team,’ said Macdonald. “
Right now, the best way that we can win in my opinion is for me to call the plays, and then when it becomes obvious that someone else is ready to go and we see it the same way, we’ll make that change. “
MCDONALD COACHES
The defensive side of the ball is further along than the other. Macdonald has hired Leslie Fraser the Minnesota Viking’s former head coach and assistant defensive coordinator for the Bills and Vikings. Kirk Olivadotti will coach the linebackers, and Karl Scott is set to remain in his present role as the Seahawks’ passing game coordinator. Jay Harbaugh son of San Diego head coach Jim Harbaugh is set to become the Seahawk’s special team’s coordinator.
