Head coach Mike Macdonald has completed the hiring of his top two assistants. A day after reportedly hiring Aden Durde as his defensive coordinator, Macdonald is reported set to hire former Washington Huskies offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb as the team OC. The Seahawks interviewed several candidates but sources have confirmed their eyes were always on Grubb.
WHY GRUBB?
Grubb has been the hottest offensive coordinator in college for the last several years. Before the Huskies title run last year Grubb met with former Alabama Crimson Tide coach Lou Saban regarding the team offensive coordinator job. Grubb returned to Washington and masterminded the number one passing and 10th overall offense last season. The Huskies’ offense was led by Heisman Trophy runner-up Michael Penix Jr. who had 83 scrimmage plays of 20 or more which was third in college football.
That same offense had 41 plays of 30 yards or more which was also third best in the nation. Penix Jr had arguably two of the best receivers in Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk. Odunze led the nation with 60 receptions of 10-plus and was No. 2 with 28 of 20-plus yards, while Polk had 17 20-plus yard receptions (17th in the nation).
A MAD SCIENTIST
Grubb is a creative offensive innovator whose philosophy is to find the weakness in the defense with multiple pre-snap motion movements. How the defense reacts to the pre-snap motion will dictate what play to call on defense. Former Husky offensive line coach Scott Huff is expected to join Grubb.
COACHING STAFF NEARLY COMPLETE
The hiring of Grubb completes the hiring of McDonald’s significant coaching vacancies. In addition to hiring Durde as defensive coordinator r Macdonald has already hired Jay Harbaugh as special teams coordinator and former Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier as assistant head coach.
THE BIG TAKE
This was another brilliant move by Macdonald and General Manager Schneider. They knew who they wanted from the beginning, and conducted a thorough search that brought them back to their original first choice. That is the process Schneider used to hire Macdonald. The hiring of Huff provides continuity for Grubb. The question yet to be answered is who will be the team’s quarterbacks and receivers coach. You have to figure those hires will be veteran coaches.
