Seahawks unable to keep up with 49ers in 28-16 loss.

It was always going to be a difficult ask for the Seahawks to snap their three-game win streak against a team that had beaten them four consecutive games.  A team that is the NFC Division Leader and a pre-emptive favorite to win the Super Bowl. The Seahawk’s task to beat the 49ers became an improbability when it was announced quarterback Geno Smith would miss the game.  Backup quarterback Drew Lock would start his first game as a Seahawk.

DECENT QUARTER

Lock’s task of leading the Seahawks to a  victory looked nearly impossible when the 49ers scored on the game’s first drive after just two plays. Christian McCaffrey bolted for 75 yards on the first play from scrimmage to the Seahawks three-yard line. Jordan Mason punched it on the next play to give the 49ers a 7-0 lead.  Lock showed he was up for the task when he connected with DK Metcalf on 31-yard TD pass play to tie the game. Both defensives dug in, and it was the Seahawks who ended the first quarter with a 10-7 lead after a Jason Myers 40-yard field goal.

DOMINANT SECOND QUARTER

A determined 49ers defense allowed the Seahawks offense just two first downs in the second quarter.   The 49ers offense took the lead when  Brock Purdy connected with Deebo Samuel on a 54-yard  touchdown play. The 49ers went into the halftime with a 14-10 lead and never looked back.

SECOND HALF STRUGGLES

Two consecutive punts to start the third quarter by the Seahawks offense saw the  49ers increase its leads to 21-10 on another Purdy to Samuel pass play. The Seahawks looked like they had some fight left when they answered the 49er’s score with their own.  After a doble screen pass fake Lock hit  Colby Parkinson who rambled into the 49ers endzone from 25 yards out. A failed two-point try saw the Seahawks trailing 21 to 16 with less than a minute left in the third quarter.

49ers DEFENSE SHUTS  DOWN SEAHAWKS OFFENSE

Another Purdy to Samuel passes play set up the 49er’s next touchdown.  After the Purdy to Samuel pass play,  Purdy connected with  TE George Kittle on a 44-yard touchdown throw for the  28-16 lead.  Down two scores the Seahawks offense was desperate and played into the hands of a blitzing 49ers defense.  Lock threw two fourth-quarter interceptions, and the Seahawks suffered their fourth consecutive loss.

“We came in here buckled up, ready to go play these guys, and we just got outplayed by their guys on offense too many times to win the game today. They had a bunch of explosive plays doing the things that they do, Seahawks head coach Pete Carrol said after the game. “There’s nothing new, just stuff that they did. They executed really.well. They made some great throws when the guys were open down the field. [49ers QB Brock]Purdy did a nice job with that. There were too many explosive plays to hold these guys in check, so we’ve got to give them a lot of credit. They’re a good club and had we done those things that would’ve been a much tighter football game.”
