Mariners sign pitcher Brett de Geus to minor league contract

Former Dodgers draft pick Brett de Gues has yet to deliver in the Majors, but now gets an opportunity with the Mariners organization.

While not officially confirmed yet by the Mariners, they have apparently added a new player to the organizational depth chart. As per MLB.com, they have signed Brett de Geus to a minor league contract and assigned him to the Tacoma Rainiers.

Selected by the Dodgers in the 33rd round of the 2017 draft, de Geus has struggled to make a breakthrough in the Majors. After seeing time as a starter in 2018 with Ogden in the Pioneer League, he has since all but worked exclusively out of the bullpen. (He had two starts this past season in Double-A, with Northwest Arkansas.)

Little success thus far in the Majors

The only time the 26-year-old has seen action so far in the Majors came in 2021, and to say he struggled would be an understatement. He made his Major League debut with the Rangers, giving up three earned runs in just one inning.

de Geus would go on to make 19 appearances in total for the Rangers, as he pitched 26.2 innings. In the process he recorded a 8.44 ERA, 4.82 FIP and 1.650 WHIP.

The righty was designated for assignment in June and subsequently claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks. He appeared in 28 games for them, producing a 6.56 ERA, 5.36 FIP and 1.843 WHIP in 23.1 combined innings.

Since then, de Geus spent time pitching in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, before being picked up by the Kansas City Royals during this past season. He had contrasting fortunes in the minors for the Royals organization.

Mixed results

The Pleasanton, California native excelled in 20 Double-A appearances, with a 2.80 ERA and 1.189 WHIP in 35.1 innings. However, he struggled terribly in nine Triple-A games, recording a 11.45 ERA and 2.727 WHIP in 11.0 combined innings and became a free agent after the season.

In terms of the weapons at de Gues’ disposal, these include a fastball which averages around 95 mph but can reach 98 on the radar gun. He also has a dangerous cutter, which sits between 87-90 mph.

For what it’s worth de Gues is good at getting the ball on the ground, something which the Mariners value greatly. However, whether he is capable of becoming a reliable bullpen option at the Major League level, is still debatable at this stage.
