Sounders FC lack conviction in 1-0 loss to FC Dallas

TEAMS NINE-GAME UNEATEN STREAK SNAPPED

The Seattle Sounders’ nine-game unbeaten streak came to a halt after a 1-0 loss to FC Dallas.  The loss was a measuring stick for the Sounders and a preview of what lies ahead in the upcoming MLS  Playoffs.  Nothing is certain, but the nine-match unbeaten streak was a reminder of who the team is and what they can become.   The resurgence came from previous first-team starters returning from injuries, sparking a competitive battle for playing time. The players’ connectedness kept the competition healthy without internal strife—a perfect storm for the coaching staff and the team as a whole.

A REMINDER OF  WHAT LIES AHEAD

The loss to FC Dallas reminded the Sounders how much work they need to do to score when they need to. The players wanted to score, no doubt, and they improved their tactical awareness and movement inside the box.    In Wednesday’s loss, the Sounders had seven first-half shots, with two big chances missed. Of the seven shots, the Sounders forced one save from FC Dallas Keeper Daniel, who just pushed wide Jackson  Ragen’s outstretched stab at an exquisite cross by Albert Runák. The Brazilian international’s lone save was highlight-reel worthy.

The Sounders lacked conviction in their shooting.  The conviction and belief that your shot will go in.  Had Ragen had more conviction, that ball would have gone past Daniel. Granted, it’s a tough after for a center back to complete a half volley inside the box. Striker Dejan Joeljic had a half chance in the 27th minute that should have gone in with a more clinical finish. The striker’s shot forced another save from Daniel.

SECOND HALF WENT FROM BAD TO WORSE

The good news for the Sounders in the first half, aside from Nouhou’s injury, was that the team played its customary steadfast defense and blocked three of the home side’s seven first-half shots. Similar to the Sounders, FC Dallas had one shot on goal, and another went just wide of Thomas. The bad news is that the team’s attacking prowess went from good to bad, then ugly.

Coming out of the half-time break, Dallas used a high press, which offered several counterattacks for the home side, who had the Sounders on their back heels. Continued counterattacks and the Sounders’ inability to gain a foothold led to an exquisite goal by the Hops in the 63rd minute.   A failed Sounders corner clearance floated to Dallas centerback Osze Urhoghide, who headed it to an unmarked Kaick Ferreira, who unleashed a full-volley goal that ended in the back of the Sounders’ net to give Dallas a 1-0 lead.

CHANCES BUT WITH NO REAL CONVICTION

With the 1-0 lead, Dallas dominated possession against the Sounders, who had the intent to score but couldn’t find an answer in the final third. The Sounders strung together the first two passes in their build-up but lacked determination and courage in the box. They lacked an attacking player to run through the five-back Dallas defense and create space for a secondary run by another Sounders attacker or ball carrier. Breaking down a 1-4-5 formation takes patience, timing, and tenacity at the right moment. The Sounders had several half-chances in the waning moments but couldn’t break through Dallas’s fortified defense.

BIG TAKE

FC Dallas is third in the Western Conference and one of its top teams.  They are a disciplined side that knows how to close out games when leading. They play the kind of soccer you see in the postseason. Teams will be fortified when defending. The Sounders will have to increase their ability to break down teams if they are to make a run in the playoffs.
