The Washington Huskies fall to the Minnesota Golden Gophers 24 to 27

The Washington Huskies (3-1) fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers (3-1), 27- 24, to begin Big Ten Conference play. The Huskies’ offense struggled all night against a stout Gophers defense.

Gophers quarterback Drake Lindsey, meanwhile, had a great game. He finished with 21-29 for 204 yards and 3 Touchdowns. The Golden Gophers wide receivers made it difficult for the Huskies Corners all night. Freshman Wide Receiver Quayd Hendryx struck first by scoring a 15-yard touchdown 9 minutes into the first quarter for his first career score.    Wide receiver Javon Tracy also got a 6-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter. By the time the game ended, the Minnesota Golden Gophers had a Total of 329 yards compared to the Huskies 279 yards.

Lack of discipline 

Despite a season-low five penalties for 40yards against the Gophers, the Huskies’ undisciplined play nearly hurt them early in the game. Midway through the first quarter Jacob Lane committed a roughing the passer penalty that extended the drive for the Gophers

Although Minnesota didn’t score and had to punt on that drive, it put the Huskies deep in their territory. The Gophers took advantage of the field position got major pressure on Demond Williams on the first play. Williams held onto the ball too long, and he got hit by edge rusher Anthony Smith, which led to an interception by Linebacker Maverick Baronowski, setting up the Gophers offense with great field position with 7 mins left to go in the first quarter. 

“Yeah, it was a play I made in the first three weeks of the season, just on the boot tryna climb up and hit my play maker,” said Williams. “I kind of got hit while throwing the ball, but I take that 100 percent, I just got to be smarter in that situation.”

Drake Lindsey capitalized on tHuskies’ies errors by connecting with wide receiver Jalen Smith for a 9-yard touchdown. Despite the 3 touchdowns Williams contributed, the quarterback was sacked 7 times and also threw two costly interceptions. The second one coming late in the 3rd quarter by defensive back John Nestor.

“They’re a very good defensive line and very good linebacking core. I think our O line held up, a lot of the times I was getting sacked or pressure, I was holding the ball too long,” Williams said. I feel like it falls on me, so it’s back to the drawing board, use it as motivation, and try to continue to get better throughout the season.”

Dezman Roebuck

One constant on offense has been the play Dezman Roebuck. After a rough first quarter in which the Huskies were down 14-0, their fortunes changed in the second quarter when Williams and Roebuck connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass. Roebuck finished the game with 87 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Minnesota’s Rushing Unit 

The Gophers’ three-headed monster running back unit of TJ Thomas, Darius Taylor, and Xavier Ford made life difficult for the Husky defense. TJ Thomas led the group in rushing with with 78 yards on 11 carries with an average of 7.1 yards a carry. Taylor rushed for 36 yards on 19 attempts. And Xavier Ford rushed for 11 yards on 3 attempts.

“They offensively ran the ball well, and were able to break some tackles,” Fisch said. “We’ve got to make some tackles there, we’ve got to play better, I’ve got to coach better.

UW Huskies vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers Post Game Notes

  • Dezmen Roebuck led the Huskies with seven receptions tonight and has notched seven or more in each game this season. He’s on pace for 90 catches this regular season, which would rank third in UW history.
  • Buddah Al-Uqdah’s fourth-quarter interception was his first as a Husky.
  • Tight end Baron Naone’s touchdown reception was his first of the season.
  • Six different Huskies have caught TD passes this season, on a total of eight.
  • Washington and Minnesota have met 18 times, with the Golden Gophers leading the series 1- 7. The two teams had not faced one another since 1977.
