The Seahawks’ head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed the obvious Wednesday afternoon. Macdonald announced Drew Lock would start at quarterback when the Seahawks travel to Arizona for Sunday’s NFC West showdown.
“Not sure what’s out there right now. Sam’s (Darnold) going to be out this game; Drew (Lock) will start for us,’ said Macdonald. “ I don’t anticipate putting him on IR (injured reserve) or anything like that. We’ll re-evaluate every day and re-evaluate next week, and we’ll go from there. He won’t play this week.”
GOOD PERFORMANCE WHEN CALLED INTO THE GAME
Lock stepped for Darnold after the first offensive series in the Seahawks’ last Wednesday night 13-10 win over the New England Patriots. The eight-year veteran had a solid performance, completing 16/22 pass attempts for 187 yards and one touchdown, while also recording one sack and a quarterback rating of 113. Darnold has been diagnosed with a glute injury and will not be placed on injured reserve, suggesting the injury is short-term.
A FULL WEEK OF REPS
While it came as no surprise that Lock will start this week, getting first-team reps will enhance his preparation for the Cardinals.
“He’ll get all the reps. He’s our starter this week, and we’ll operate accordingly. Drew’s (Lock) knows he’s going to start here for a while. I’m looking forward to seeing him practice today, just like I am Sam (Darnold) when he’s playing,’ added Macdonald. “ We’ve had some episodes in our history here, especially the latter parts of last year, where we felt like Drew was about to go play for us. Nothing changes.” The last time Lock started an NFL game was in 2024 when he was with the New York Giants. Lock started five games for the Giants.
He completed 103/172 pass attempts for 1,062 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. The Seahawks resigned as a free agent in 2025. Last season, Lock saw action in four games and completed 2/3 pass attempts for 16 yards. Respected and admired by teammates for his preparation and leadership, Lock is considered the league’s best second-string quarterback. Against the Cardinals, Lock will have another chance to display his skill set.
“ Drew’s a joyful guy. He’s a great guy; he’s got his own personality, and we love it. He’s got his style of playing quarterback, which is what we want here,’ said Macdonald when asked about Lock’s demeanor and what the expectations are for him on Sunday. “ We want to be within the scheme and how we’re training our guys, but you have to be yourself too. Drew is that, and we’re looking forward to it.”
