Friday was a historic day of sorts for the City of Seattle. The Emerald City hosted an unforgettable FIFA World Cup match between the USMNT and Australia, and the City joined the nation in celebrating Juneteenth. It was an eclectic day that saw titillating soccer, cultural celebrations, and viewing parties that went well into the night.

Great images from a wonderful day. My twelve hours in Seattle yesterday was the cap to a nearly 30-year dream to see the Emerald City as a World Cup host site. Most Seattleites, certainly those who have moved there since Referendum 48 was passed, never knew or have forgotten that the measures’ passage provided public funds for a new Seahawks Stadium. It was soccer fans’ insistence that the stadium’s construction met FIFA requirements to be a host site that led to the measure being passed. I was proud to have been a part of that movement. Although my original plan was to spend five World Cup weeks in Seattle, those plans changed. However, after the USMNT’s first win, I realized I’d never forgive myself for not being there yesterday. It was a marvelous experience watching the match in Pioneer Square, blocks from the stadium, with friends. I had the team winning 2-0!
