A legion of fans descended upon Seattle Stadium, creating a concert-like atmosphere, with supporters from the United States and Australia singing and chanting before Sunday’s World Cup Group D clash. Both teams were undefeated going into the epic match after opening round wins.
After allowing Australia a quick start to the one against Paraguay, Mauricio Pochettino’s side attacked from the left early and often, with Pepi starting just to the right of Balogun to maximize offensive options and flexibility.
LEFT-SIDED ATTACK
Antonee Robinson pushed up on the left touchline, which then created space for Malik Tilman. The combination play between Robinson and Tilman Bologna’s space for Balonga, who was free to roam. Bologna’s speed and pace overwhelmed the Australian right back, Jacob Italiano—the cat-and-mouse game between the three overwhelmed the Australian back line. Balogun streaked down the left flank and slid the ball into the goal box for the galloping Pepi. Australian defender Cameron Burgess was credited with an own goal when he tried to clear the ball.
U.S. CUSNUES TO ATTACK
The U.S. used to attack the Aussies with quick forward passes that split and moved the Australian defense. To counter the Stars and Stripes’ high-flying attack, the Australians adopted a slow-down, tactical strategy. During Thursday’s press conference, head coach Mauricio Pochettino talked about how belief would be an important factor in the crucial match against the Aussies. That belief showed up in the players’ understanding of their roles and their steadfast resolve to execute the plan.
“Today, with the possibility to play with two strikers, I think, trying to pin the three central back and using the pocket in behind the two midfielders, to make the ball quick from one side to another,” Pochettino said. ”This triangle, on one side, Antonee Robinson, Pepe, and Malik”Tillman, and then, Weston McKennie, and Balogun.”
SECOND HALF SURVIVAL
The second half saw a contrast of styles. Australian coach Tony Popovic made three substitutions to start the second half. Jason Geria replaced Burges, Connor Metcalf replaced Nishan Velupilay, and Mohammed Toure gave way to Nestory Irankunda. Mecalfe and Irankuda each scored in the Socceros 2-0 win over Turkiye. Australia’s duo brought pace and some bite to Australia’s attack. Pochettino stayed with Australia’s starting XI. The game tipped in the Aussies’ favor as they put the U.S. on its back foot, which turned into a physical, cagey affair. Antonee Robinson received a yellow in the 56th minute. Minutes earlier, Bolagun had a chance to put the game to bed but was too slow in pulling the trigger on a breakaway.
SUBSTITUTIONS CHANGE THE GAME
In the 61st minute, Cristian Volpate replaced Matthew Leckie to bolster Australia’s attack. While they stayed on the front foot, the Aussies were unable to get that clear Pochettino shot that would get them on the scoresheet. Pochettino’s first sub of the game came in the 74th minute. Aussie Sebastian Berhalter replaced Pepi. The Aussies’ fifth and final sub came in the 78th minute when Jackson Irvine replaced Paul Okon- Engstler. Sensing tired legs and the need to protect yellow-carded players, Pochettino inserted Josep Scally for Dest and Auston Trusty for Robinson in the 80th minute.
SCRAPPY END
The final minutes of the game turned into a street scrap, with a yellow card issued to Harry Souttar in the 88th minute, Balogun in the 89th minute, and Italiano in the 90th minute. Chris Richards received the U.S.’s third yellow card in the 93rd minute. The U.S. players stayed out of harm’s way, finished the game without further incidents, put a stranglehold on the group, and ensured a trip to the knockout round. Aussies’ game, Pochettino was asked about the Aussies’ physical tactics.
“ What I saw was a team that believed in what they are doing. We needed to be flexible; that capacity to adapt to the opponent’s tactics is all I can comment on,’ Pochettino said.
“We have to keep believing. We have to believe we can win and know it will be hard. Nothing has changed. We have to ensure we arrive in good condition, tough with ourselves, push ourselves.”
