Matt Brash just can’t catch a break with the Seattle Mariners, but at least Miles Mastrobuoni is now back from the 60-day Injured List.
It just seems at the moment that the Mariners can’t even go one day without another injury announcement. The latest one particularly hurts though, with the confirmation by Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander, that Matt Brash has been placed on the 15-day Injured List, retroactive to June 9.
This is the second time Brash has been placed on the Injured List this season, and with the same right lat strain he dealt with on the previous occasion at the end of April. It’s clearly a big blow for him and the team, with the Mariners bullpen seemingly hanging on at the moment.
The irony behind this is that Brash declined an invitation to pitch for Team Canada at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, in order to protect his health and focus fully on the Major League season. It’s also frustrating given the start he’s had to this year, with a 0.54 ERA and 0.840 WHIP highlighting a projected career campaign.
As mentioned, the bullpen has been seemingly hanging on of late, despite ranking fifth in the majors with a 3.20 ERA. They’re down a man with the Mariners currently using a six-man rotation, Cooper Criswell went on the 15-day Injured List on Tuesday and Carlos Vargas — one of their most used relievers last season — has yet to pitch in 2026.
Miles Mastrobuoni is back and aiming to make his presence felt

On the more positive side, Hollander also announced Miles Mastrobuoni has been reinstated from the 60-day Injured List. He was making some noise during spring training and seemed like an outside bet to make the opening day 26-man roster, but suffered a right calf strain while taking part in the World Baseball Classic with Italy.
Mastrobuoni’s best asset is that he’s a utility player, with Major League experience playing at all four infield positions as well as the corner outfield spots. Last season — his first in Seattle — he batted .250 in a career-high 76 games, and will now be hoping to make the most of this latest opportunity.
As per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, more positive news came with Colt Emeson advising the minor back spasm he recently suffered had subsided. He was a late scratch on Monday, but was back swinging in the batting cage on Wednesday and is optimistic he’ll return to the lineup on Thursday.
Hollander confirmed three other roster moves on Wednesday, including righty Domingo González being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma and infielder Ryan Bliss heading in the opposite direction. Finally, right-handed pitcher Yosver Zulueta has been designated for assignment.
