It felt very much like the first day of school for the 68 rookies and first-year players who hit the practice field at the Virginia Mason on Friday afternoon. Front and center were the Seahawks’ eight draftees. All the attention was on first-round draft pick Jadarian Price.
In addition to Price, safety Bud Clark, c Julian Neal, g Beau Stephens, wr Emmanuel Henderson, cornerbacks Andre Fuller, Michael Dansby, and nose tackle Deven Eastern showed why the team made an investment in their future.
SHOWING THE PART
It will take well into training camp to assess what type of impact Price will have. If first impressions are lasting impressions, Price has a chance to be an impact player for the Seahawks.
The former Irish halfback was quick on his feet and showed his lateral movement during the drills portion of the practice. In the controlled scrimmage, Price showed breakaway speed, decisiveness, and pass-catching abilities. Henderson Jr. showed precision route-running ability and the speed needed to get past defenders. Though he did not have a highlight catch, Henderson showed why the Seahawks drafted him.
DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL
With Legion of Boom member Richard Sherman in the house, Neal, Fuller, and Dansby had extra incentive to showcase their skills.
“ It was a dream come true, and I was nervous at the beginning, “ Neal said. “ It was then that I was told that I am a football player, and this is what I do. And I was talking to Richard Sherman practice after practice, I mean, this is the place for me. “
For Clark the point of the day was to get used to the surroundings, get a taste of how coaches get the message out to the players during live action. While Clark was able to execute the coach’s plans for him, meeting Sherman was a bit more intimidating for him
“ I walked up to him, shook his hand, and told him I am Bud Clark. I didn’t want to fan boy, but I wanted to get a picture with him, Clark,” said. “ I mean, I knew I could since I am now a Seahawks fan and all . But it was cool seeing him here.”
GETTING USED TO THE SEAHAWKS CULTURE
For the draftees and the rest of the players, Day one was about catching up to the speed of play in the NFL both physically and mentally.
“ It is just to show where you are , how good shape you are in, there is a lot before the season starts, it is an opportunity show the fundamentals that I have been taught, and tweak my game to the way coach Benton wants me to perform,’ rookie guard Beau Stephens said. Stephens was referencing offensive line coach John Benton.
