Seattle Storm Faces Major Setback with Ezi Magbegor’s Injury

The Seattle Storm has suffered its first major setback days into training camp.  The team announced that forward Ezi Magbegor suffered a right foot injury while playing for Australia in the 2026 FIFA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers in Istanbul and will be out for 6-8 weeks.

LEADERSHIP ON AND OFF THE COURT

The absence of the 26-year-old two-time Olympian will be a major blow to a young Seattle team that was looking for leadership on and off the court. The Storm lost its top five scorers, and Magbegor was the team’s top returning scorer, averaging 8.0 points per gam, 6.2 rebounds, and  2.2 blocked shots a game. Magbegor was a WNBA All-Star in 2023, a 2020 Champion with the Storm, and has been named to the 3x WNBA All-Defensive Team.

“It’s my first time I’ve been injured for that amount of time,” Magbegor said. “And so just finding ways still to be part of the team from the sideline. I’m still working to get back in those six to eight weeks. So just taking it day by day, working with the medical team here, and  I will continue to be a leader on and off the court during my recovery period.”

After the loss of the top five scorers, which included 10-time WNBA All-Star Neck Ogwumike, 7-time WNBA All-Star Skylar Diggins, Gabby Williams, Erica Wheeler, and Brittney Sykes, and the hiring of new head coach Sonia Raman, the Storm hit the reset button.

In the concluded 2026 draft, the Storm drafted 19-year-old Awa Fa with the no. 2 pick and no. 8 selection Flau’jae Johnson, who was acquired in a draft-day trade with the Golden State Valkyries. The two draftees will join the 2025 draft and the No. 2 pick overall, Dominique Malonga.
