Day One of the NFL’s legal tampering period saw the Seahawks lose three players and retain two. The Seahawks retained Josh Jobe and Rashid Shaheed while losing Ken Walker III, Coby Bryant, and Boey Mafe. Super Bowl MVP wasted no time, exiting stage left, and signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, with $28.7M fully guaranteed.
The Seahawks could have tagged Walker with the franchise tag, but chose to let him hit the free-agent market. When Walker hit the market, it was a forgone conclusion that he would not return to Seattle. Walker’s payday means the Seahawks’ running room has three healthy running backs. George Holani is on the active roster while Velus Jones and Cam Akers are on the practice squad. There is no doubt that the Seahawks will actively add to the running back corps using free agency and the draft. Zach Charbonnet and Kenny MacIntosh are on injured reserve.
OPPORTUNITY FOR OKADA
The second player to leave was safety Coby Bryant. The loss of Bryant to the Chicago Bears on a three-year, $40 million contract inserts Ty Okada as the starting safety alongside Julian Love. Okada started 11 of 17 games and showed his versatility, stepping in for Julian Love and Bryant during the 2026 season.
BOYE MAFE GETS A HUGE PAY DAY
The third player and final player to leave the Hawks was Mafe, whose departure was not a big surprise. While the Seahawks wanted to retain Mafe, his offer sheet from the Cincinnati Bengals was beyond the team’s budget. The Seahawks drafted Mafe in the second round of the 2022 draft, the 40th pick overall. His best year was in 2023. He started all 16 games and set career highs with 9 sacks, 35 solo tackles, and 16 quarterback hits. In 2024, he started 11 of 15 games, and last year, he started 4 games but was an integral part of the Seahawks’ top-ranked defense, led by the defensive line.
TWO VITAL PIECES ON EACH SIDE OF THE BALL
The Seahawks did manage to retain the services of Rashid Shaheed on a three-year, $51 million deal. The retention of Shaheed was a pleasant surprise but not unexpected. The Seahawks traded for Shaheed in November, and the former Saint changed the Seahawks’ special teams fortunes. Shaheed became the only player in the 2025 season to return a kickoff and a punt return for a touchdown.
In the postseason, he returned the opening kickoff 95 yards against the Niners in the Divisional round. A dual threat on special teams and as a wide receiver was too valuable for the Seahawks to let him go.
A WORKMAN’S ATTITUDE
The retention of Josh Jobes is a big get for the Seahawks at the right price. The fourth-year cornerback agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal. The Seahawks signed Jobe to the practice squad in August of 2024 after the Philadelphia Eagles released him. Was signed to the active roster in November, started four games, but suffered a knee injury that placed him on injured reserve in the season-ending game against the Rams. Jobe started the second game of the 2025 season and missed just one game the rest of the way, recording career highs in tackles (54), sacks (0.5), one interception, and 12 pass deflections.
Re-signed CB Josh Jobe to a 3-year, $24M deal.
